Utes get defensive in scrimmage
Utah's defense forced a fumble, had four interceptions and recorded seven sacks as they dominated the scrimmage Monday afternoon.
The offense, which continues without quarterback Jordan Wynn, struggled. Tyler Shreve, who led the first unit, finished the day completing 11 of 25 passes for 107 yards. He also threw an interception and managed one touchdown during red zone drills. Griff Robles was 6 of 13 and had three interceptions.
Terrell Reese returned an interception 83-yards before being tackled just short of the end zone. Michael Walker, Dave Fagergren and Boo Anderson accounted for the other three interceptions.
Wednesday marks the final full practice of spring camp before the Red & White game this Saturday.

I was able to go to the practice
They probably can’t wait till Wynn can get back. The offense couldn’t get much done. There were a couple non ints that hit the defenders on the gloves but they couldn’t make the catch. The recievers also had a few issues catching balls. The d line was solid though and even batted a couple passes down. They did very well stoping the run.
I wasn’t impressed with the offense at all. I don’t know if it’s the transfer to west coast or just losing so many players. The last play summed it up well, #15 (haven’t checked a roster yet so I don’t know all the numbers) fumbled a handoff down the center and #97 picked it up and ran the other way.
Kickers did well, all the kick offs were within the 5 yard line and or in the endzone. But the coverage was awful. I don’t think anyone gained less than 20 yards.
Hopefully they can get that offense together in time for September. Or maybe November, that sounds better to me.

What does it mean? Every play you are both happy and sad. You never know if you should be happy about the winner or nervous about the loser.

Great to see Norm Chow
Stopped by for a little over an hour of today’s scrimmage. It was great to see Norm Chow roaming the sidelines before the start of play.
The quarterback almost had more tackles than anybody else. (Just kidding) After one interception was returned for a breakout run, the QB managed to make a tackle at the 2-yard line. (I kept thinking he would get yelled at for risking himself that way.)
Vocal Chops: When Whitt is mad, he can be heard throughout the stadium clear as day. Somebody made an illegal block in the back and a player got beat up on the play. Whitt laid into the offending player. My ears went red. On another play “OFFSIDE? You’ve got to be kidding me. Get off the field!”
Other observations:
kicking coverage is still a problem. Several close calls, and one blocked kick that was whistled dead just as the defender picked it up to head for the end zone.
Rugby player is a hoss (if I was looking at the right player). Big guy, but the plays didn’t always fool the defense, leading to very short yardage. Seems like they lined up with one guy in the backfield alot.
One handoff fake looked better than anything last year. Several defenders went after the guy who didn’t have the ball. Last year, Wynn was not very believable when faking a handoff.
Football is like music. When you hear the first few rehearsals before a big performance, it is easy to say “man, how is this ever going to come together in time?”
Can’t wait!
Go Utes
The fake did look great.
They were able to sell that nicely. And the qb lined up under center a lot. Not much shotgun.
And I loved the sound bites. After the scrimage I heard one of the coaches swearing at the players, classic.

OH NOES!!! I'LL SIT DOWN AND CRY NOW!!!
A) Nobody’s perfect. BYU ain’t, that’s for sure. I’m True Blue, but I am perhaps the only person EVER to cheer both BYU and U of U. However, I just want to set something straight: There really are a few Utes that are foul-mouth drunks, but DEFINITELY not the majority, they are just the loudest. Most Utes are just like people everywhere else. There are a few super self-righteous quick-to-condemn types at BYU. They aren’t the majority. Most of us realize that although we are a church school, the people there aren’t angels. I’ve heard my bosses at the Y swear, my classmates, my professors. I mean, Harvey Unga and Brandon Davies were both suspended for something we consider far worse than swearing!
B) Curious, though, as to these supposed TV “oopses,” of Jimmer and Hall. Hall, I believe. (I can’t stand him, personally…) Jimmer, I don’t believe. I know the guy personally. I couldn’t find anything on google, so I kind of doubt it. Care to post the evidence?
Really though, even if he had, it wouldn’t really shatter me. Sorry.
I was wondering about the Jimmer one.
I remember one of the Az Cardnals players said Hall swore when he first got into the huddle, and I woudn’t doubt it. But I don’t think Jmmer has droped and f bomb. I’ve heard other players do that when Jimmer makes a good play on them but not him.

I like to follow both teams, and I just stopped reading his “cougar tracks” too much sugar coating.
His broadcasts are atrocious unless you are a cougar fan. He whines about every refs call. when the refs make a bad call, he pounces on it and puts it up as an excuse in case the cougars lose.
He gets too emotional. But hey, Im not a cougar fan, so if he is good for his audience, I can just ignore him.

Wrubell is good in some ways.
He is animated and calls a good game in many ways. It is when he is a major homer that he can be annoying. Some of his animated qualities that make him call an otherwise good game can make him go a bit crazy at times.
I listened to the Utah State radio broadcast of the K-State NCAA tournament game. Those Utah State broadcasters where horrible. It was painfull to listen to. I turned it off at half time because I just couldn’t take it anymore. I was rooting for the Aggies to win, but I just couldn’t handle the homers complaining about the refs every time they spoke. I wouldn’t be able to listen to that crap even if I were a diehard Aggie fan.
I am fine mentioning a bad ref call, but move on. Don’t make it take over the broadcast.
"From the end spring new beginnings." - Pliny the Elder

Tell me, do you believe BYU Fans are a morally superior people then Utah fans? Do you believe more BYU fans are
going to heaven then Utah fans? I already know the answer, it is yes. Why do so many BYU fans need to make sure Utah fans know that. I am just getting sick and tired of BYU fans telling me they are morrally superior and more classy than me. Some even going so far as comparing Utah to the great and spaceous building.

Sorry, I am not accustomed to BYU fans who can joke.
I apologize. Usually it is BYU fans pointing out their superiority. It is fun to point out to those people their faults of being judgemental and the like. Ultimately it is just fun to fling some names back.
As long as BYU fans consider them self more classy I will continue to point out their condescending attitude. It’s just fun to give them a mirror.
"From the end spring new beginnings." - Pliny the Elder
One hears what one expects to hear...
I think that this is a classic example of what fans on BOTH sides do all the time. Many expect the worst from the other side and therefore interpret anything said or done by the other side in the worst way possible.
I’m not being judgmental here. BYU fans do it all the time too…
Ironically, however, whenever you call somebody “judgmental,” you are passing judgment on them.
Most BYU fans don’t consider themselves more classy. Just Max Hall and a few really obnoxiously loud ones, so people assume the rest of us are that way.
Who’s going to heaven? Seriously? It sounds like you’ve already decided BYU fans are not…
Seriously dude, give cougars a chance to be good people to you before you pass judgment.
Looking at my post...
I’m sure a litany of stories about how our evil nature has been verified will follow.
And if you didn't immetialty think of Patsy Cline after this post, you really are crazy.
"From the end spring new beginnings." - Pliny the Elder
I have a lot of friends and family who are Cougar fans.
I give them a chance all the time. I even root for the Cougars to win when they don’t play the U. I still like to harass them.
No I have not decided BYU fans are not going to heaven. I have no idea how you came up with that one. I guess you were interpreting what I said in the worst way possible. Probably because you heard what you expected to hear.
It is true that I have decided that BYU fans have a moral superiority complex that annoys me. If you don’t see it you are blind and deaf.
It reminds me of the time I told the following joke…
A Catholic was walking with God in heaven when God turned to the catholic and said, “Shush, be quite when you pass this door.” After they passed the Catholic turned to God and asked why they had to be quiet as the passed that door. God answered by saying, “Oh the mormons are in there and they think they are alone up there.”
After I told the joke one women came up to me and said, “Well you know it’s true.”
(Note: Because I was a clean cut person who hangs out with mormons the listeners of this joke assumed I was mormon.)
"From the end spring new beginnings." - Pliny the Elder
Well, I like the joke...
It’s one I tell often enough… And yes, that is soo true of Utah Mormons.
But… “It is true that I have decided that BYU fans have a moral superiority complex that annoys me. If you don’t see it you are blind and deaf.”
Wow. Just wow. Thanks for proving to me how very judgmental we are. Boy, you sure showed me.
Geez, I don’t think we have any kind of moral superiority. Then again, I also don’t think we have moral inferiority. I think there are plenty of good people all around, and we stand on equal footing, morally. Many BYU fans are the way you say, but I think it’s unfair to make that kind of generalization for us all, in the same way that some Cougs say that all Ute fans are “classless.” (Hall should go suck a …lemon…)
Statements like the one that I quoted above are everything that is wrong with the rivalry to me. People being judged by which team they cheer for. Lots of fans on both sides do it, and that post there sure makes it seem that you are one of them. I just wish that Utes and Cougs would let opposing fans be who they are regardless of wearing red or blue.

Agreed...
The offense, without its quarterback and a depleted line, who is also learning an entirely new offense, is going to have hiccups. I’m not the least bit concerned.
Depleted line?
I don’t think Utah has a depleted O-line. Having 3 of your 5 returning starters from last years O-Line isn’t bad (Stevens, Cullin, Bergstrom). I think it’s mainly just learning a new system. The offense is always behind the defense in Spring, and not having Wynn and Devonte Christopher is a set-back for sure.

Sorry to hear the training is starting rough...
Many of you might already know I’m a BYU fan AND a U of U fan. Rare breed am I. Possibly the only one of my kind.
I have faith that the Utes will pull it together to make another amazing season. I think that this year will be rougher than last, as the Pac-12 boasts a tougher schedule than the MWC, but I’m saying a good 9-3 season, with a bowl win. I think there’s potential for 11-1 as long as Wynn can come back soon.
I’m thinking you’ll at least put a win over on BYU; our team is so young this year. Either way, looking forward to the game! 157 days…. Why must football season be so far away?
BYU is going to be a tough game...
Solely because it’s sandwiched between two huge conference games. You’ve got the first ever Pac-12 game the week before (roadie against SC) and then the first ever Pac-12 game at home (Washington).
The reality is, unless Utah runs the table (unlikely) the BYU game just doesn’t have as much meaning as it has in years past. That’s not to say it won’t be big, but it’s not a conference game anymore. Honestly, I’d rather Utah beat both Washington/SC and lose to BYU than beat BYU and split those two conference games.
Ideally, of course, they’d win all three…but it’s going to be a different feel.

It will be a big game, but it just won’t be the make-or-break game that it has been in years past. If BYU wins, the trolls will come out to pump their chests for a week or so, but thats about it. The Utes have bigger fish to fry now. It will always be awesome to beat the Y., but Pac-12 wins will be more important.

It's still BYU
I think the fact we’re no longer in the same conference has maybe lessened the rivalry for Utah fans a little, but it made it stronger for BYU fans. For DECADES BYU has always thought of themselves as “big brother”, and now that they’re in our shadow the Holy War will mean that much more to them.

I agree the game is still important
Bragging rights are always huge. I will definitely be looking forward to the game in a big way. Everyone will still care about the game and want to win.
In an imaginary world where I had to choose between going to the conference championship game and beating BYU, the choice would be simple. BYU is less important.
"From the end spring new beginnings." - Pliny the Elder
Wait... Who's the "Big Bro?"
More like most cougar fans feel that you guys think you are the big bro…
Most Cougs feel like being Independent is just as good as Pac-12, and tout Notre Dame to try to prove that. To those of us who seek national recognition, not just unique-ness in our program, we recognize that beating Pac-12 teams (like you guys) is a must.
Update: Joining the West Coast Conference and going independent in football isn't as good as being in a big six conference.
That’s reality.
"From the end spring new beginnings." - Pliny the Elder
Utah the "Big Bro"?
Coug fans shouldn’t feel like Utah’s the big bro, because we’re your daddy. Come on Coug fans, who’s your daddy?
While I think BYU can survive as an indi, I don’t think they’ll be able to thrive as an indi. Being part of a big-6 conference is better both financially and competitively speaking. ND is the only exception to that, but lets face it, BYU is no ND.

True, the Y is no ND...
Yeah, I said “most cougs” feel that indie is better; I tend to agree with you that it’s only better if we can become national football legend like ND, which is not likely. NOBODY in the history of everdom has a better winning record than ND.
If we can return to the days of Detmer, McMahon and Young, then we could pull it off. Some say Heaps is that resurrection. That has yet to be seen. After 4 terrible games to start, while finding his feet in his freshman year, he really picked up and showed promise. My verdict? Meh, possible, but not likely. I think he’ll be really good, but not Heisman good.
I think if we flub our first season as indies, we are toast. Our team is very young this year, so that might be what happens.
Bottom line, if we are able to return to glory days, then being Independent would grant us freedom and money unlike anything. It’s unlikely that we will, so I think you are right, money-wise, prestige-wise, big 6 is better in those respects.
But BYU prides itself (sometimes in a really snotty way,) on being “peculiar,” and different. (We are national legends in Rugby, Lacrosse, and volleyball, but who really cares, besides us?) I really think that BYU takes more pride in being independent than they would as part of a big 6. I think Utah is a good fit in Pac-12 and BYU is a good fit for and indie, even if not on a level of ND, more of a level of Army. We’ll do okay. I’m betting we sign into a conference in 10 years or so.
Tough game...
For BYU, Utes will be right after Ole Miss and Texas back to back, both of which will be a struggle for the Y’s young team. Might not be as tough as last year, says I. UCF is right after Utah for the Y. I think UCF is better than than most people give them credit for, but will be a welcome relief after the first few games, and especially after Utah.
I think Utes will take Washington without breaking a leg, but then you’re usually better at predictions than me, Jazzy. I say SC will be the tougher one.
Impossible
How can anyone cheer for BOTH Utah and BYU during the Holy War? That’s like wearing a fur coat while protesting at a PETA rally or sporting a Red Sox cap while you cheer for the Yankees. It just can’t be done.
You have to have a side, and since you refer to the U as “your team” and BYU as “Our team” it’s clear to see you’re what I like to call a “Bi-curios” BYU fan. It’s all good, at least there’s a little bit of light left in your soul.

Seriously...no excuse for that Y to be anywhere near the Drum and Feather.

That is an abomination

Seriously.
How can anyone wear it in good conscience? I always gag a little bit when I see these around.

Loved them. And tell me where I can buy that hat… I’m impressed that not one person said anything insulting. Last time I admitted to being a Coug on this blog was… different.
And yes, for now, it’s clear whom I cheer for when The Holy War kicks off. But the rest of the season, I’m totally waving the red when the Utes are on the field, and Blue when the Cougs go. My parents come from feuding Scottish clans, inner conflict is in my blood.
Besides, I’m not the only one who can admit that there are some major problems with BYU culture… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84u5k4bboU4&feature=related
Are. You. Kidding me
Geeze, BYU makes it too easy sometimes. As Jazzy once said: the proof is in the pudding
Fear the MUSS!!
thanks a lot, that song was stuck in my head this morning!

Wow! I'm impressed
This is the first time a BYU fan has come on here and I don’t want to tell to go away with a bunch of classless insults! Convert over to the red side already dude!
Oh, and Ted Miller put a link to this blog on his ESPN blog. We are awesome now!
You talking to me or rome?
Rome is a purple fan (red+blue=purple) so he’s already on the red side. But the blue side also.

You are ok for a bluegar. I just don’t trust you and your sneeky spying ways.

Haha, sneaky spying way?
I secretly send Bronco scouting reports on the U once a week. ;)

Be wary, lest I lull you into false security.
Just can’t trust a cougar you know… I don’t mean to be racist, but it’s those eyes, you never know what they are thinking…
Are you referencing the recent Deadspin article about BYU?

I'm already on the red side?
I think I’m more in the purple side. Even though I have red hair, I wear a blue shirt to offset.
I am true Purple and Red
Purple veins and red blood. A degree from Weber and the U.
None of the upper crust blue blood in me.
