Will Clyburn transfers to Iowa State

LAS VEGAS NV - FEBRUARY 02: Will Clyburn #21 of the Utah Utes drives against Oscar Bellfield #0 of the UNLV Rebels during their game at the Thomas & Mack Center February 2 2011 in Las Vegas Nevada. UNLV won 67-54. (Photo by Ethan Miller/Getty Images)

Though there was a slim chance of him returning to Utah, Will Clyburn has officially left the program and will transfer to Iowa State.

This really shouldn't be a surprise since Clyburn wanted to play closer to home. However, he had been practicing the last week with Larry Krystkowiak and the rest of the team.

Clyburn becomes the third player to defect from the program, as neither Preston Guiot or Antonio DiMaria will return.

He might not be the last player to leave, however. J.J. O'Brien, Chris Hines and Josh Watkins are still uncommitted, though the three have not indicated what direction they're leaning.

see ya.

We need talent like that, but we don’t need the non-commitment to excellence.

Was practice too hard?

He’s not used to floor burns and hard work, I guess.

Disappointing...

but no surprise. I think it was pretty clear from the moment Boylen was fired that he was gone. I do think we’ve got a chance to keep O’brien in the fold though.

Wow, the more I hear...

Boylen has left this program in shambles! Can’t think Giac left it this bad, talk about running a program into the ground!! I am 100% behind Coach Krystkowiak , he will need all the support he can get, the only way now is up!! I am hopeful that the program rises from the burning ashes left by Boylen and these player defections!

He didn't...

Giacoletti at least left Boylen with talent.

He couldn’t coach worth a lick, but it’s obvious he was a pretty good recruiter.

Now I’m not going to damn the players, because I think there is talent here. However, they haven’t played as a team. Not in the last two years, anyway. Which is why Will Clyburn can so easily leave the program without even getting to know this coaching staff. He was gone no matter who Utah brought in and that speaks volumes for the shape of the program. It speaks volumes for the situation each player has in this program.

The fact O’Brien, Hines and Watkins are all thinking of leaving suggests to me they don’t see Utah as a team. And I don’t fault them for that because it’s the coach who needs to cultivate that type of atmosphere. But when you’re on a team, and you’ve come to look at your teammates as family, the thought of leaving would not enter your mind – even if the coach you loved had just been fired.

Think back to 2002 when McBride was fired. He was beloved by every one of his players. They lifted him up onto their shoulders after beating BYU and pleaded with Dr. Hill to not let him go.

Yet many of those same players got over the firing and returned because I think McBride made Utah football about family more than anything. Those players had a reason to stay, even if they didn’t know squat about Meyer. Sure, retaining Whittingham helped – but that was just on the defensive end. Every offensive coach was new to the program and the players stayed. They stayed because UTAH meant more to them than the coach.

Sure, they loved McBride. But in the end, they stuck around because each teammate had become family to them.

Boylen recruited players and sold himself to them – not the program. And that’s fine to an extent because it gets his foot into their door. But he failed at creating a team. Instead, Utah these past two years was nothing more than five guys running around the court doing their own thing.

Just look at the end of the New Mexico game Utah won down in Albuquerque. It worked out – but was there any structure there? No. Just a prayer shot from Chris Hines that somehow found its way into the hoop.

Again, that isn’t faulting the players. It’s the responsibility of the coaching staff to make each player work as a team.

That never happened this year. Now it’s left to Krystkowiak to convince these players to stay – many of whom who have no reason to stay.

See your point, and I agree!

It is devestating to see our BB team in such a hole! I agree that Boylen, if was such a great coach, would have made it where the players saw Utah as home and family! I don’t fault the players for the issues. You hit the nail on the head with your point!

Giac only made it to the sweetsixteen with players that were not coming back as I recall. Bogut loved playing for Giac…whats your gripe Jazzy? he was only given three years, too bad , would have solidified the program given the chance. Boylens only run came with Giacs guys, Wake up …yeah sweet sixteen, couldnt coach a lick? what an ass clown!

You're right...

Giacoletti was awesome. Those 16and 19 loss seasons were nothin’!

Bring him back!
