Utah baseball beats SDSU, set to play New Mexico in MWC tournament

Utah's path to the NCAA Baseball Championship continues with a 7-3 win over San Diego State in their first game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. They advance to take on New Mexico, who upset TCU Wednesday night.

The Utes swept the Lobos in their series back in April, so this is certainly a winnable game for Utah. If the Utes do beat New Mexico today, they then will turn around and play the winner of Game #9 on Friday  - so the possibilities include TCU, BYU or San Diego State. That latter game will take place the same day as the Utes' contest with the potential winner - setting up a shot at winning the tournament.

If Utah loses today to New Mexico, then they would play in the Game #9 series and take on either TCU, BYU or San Diego State and then, if they were to win that game, advance to play New Mexico.

Confused? You're not the only one and I'm not exactly sure I got that all right - so don't freak out if I have some of the games mixed up.

What we do know, definitively, is that the Utes will play New Mexico today for a chance to advance.

saw on the mtn. this morning

the highlights of the TCU-UNM game. TCU looked disinterested. Utah should be able to beat UNM. I think the Utes can win this whole thing.

i'm guessing if utah wins this tourney they would goto the CWS?

i don’t follow college baseball.

Anderson Silva would never fight "Bones". He is too scared to fight the real P4P champion. Nick Diaz, the man who will prove to the MMA world that he is the best WW in the world. Still public enemy #1 and enjoying every minute of it.

No...

They would advance to the NCAA baseball championship, where they’ll join 64 other teams for a chance to advance to the College World Series.

Take 2009 for example. Utah advanced to the NCAA tournament – but didn’t make it to the CWS.

The Utes were a 4-seed in their Super Regional. They lost in the first round to 1-seed Cal State Fullerton. However, in their second game, upset 2-seed Georgia State to advance to take on 3-seed Gonzaga. Had they lost there, they would have been eliminated. However, they won and advanced to play, again, Cal State. They lost and were eliminated.

Had Utah won, they would have advanced to the Super Regionals. There they would have played for a spot in the CWS.

Only 8 of the 64 initial teams go to the CWS. They have to win their Super Regional. Look at it in similar fashion as the Final Four in college basketball.

So Utah would need to win four games to get to that point. In 2009, they only won two.

But first thing first: win the MWC. Because I don’t think Utah gets an at-large if they don’t.

agreed.

they have to win to get in. Although this has been a GREAT year for Ute baseball. CJ Cron is the jimmer of college baseball.
