Favorite Mountain West Conference memory

We're in the final day as a member of the Mountain West Conference. It's a conference Utah helped form and one that provided a great deal of memories.

What are your favorite conference games of the last 11 years?

Some of my personal favorites after the jump...

Star-divide

BYU in 1999 - The Cougars were ranked and a win away from wrapping up the inaugural outright conference championship. Utah needed a win to claim a share of the title. With a lot on the line, the Utes go down to Provo and eek out a three-point win over BYU.

CSU in 2003 - Entering the 2003 season, the Rams were the top program in the Mountain West's short history. No team had, up until that point, sustained success quite like Colorado State. So going on the road and knocking off the Rams early in the conference season really set the foundation for Utah's first outright title in a generation.

Air Force in 2003 - Not many teams, early in the conference's history, had Utah's number quite like the Falcons. Prior to the '03 game, Air Force had only lost once to the Utes in seven years. The series changed, however, with a double overtime win in Colorado Springs and Utah has lost to them only once since. This game really locked up the conference for Utah, who had fallen to New Mexico a week earlier.

BYU in 2003 - 3-0, 'nuff said.

CSU in 2004 - I hated playing CSU in the 90s and early 00s. They never dominated Utah - but they almost always found a way to win the close ones. In 2002, Utah lost by eight. In 2001, they lost by two. In 2000 and 1999, they lost by seven. So to go out and completely embarrass Colorado State in Salt Lake City was a thing of beauty. I loved every second of it. I loved that Sonny Lubick felt Urban Meyer ran up the score when he put Alex Smith back in the game with Utah leading very comfortably. I grinned throughout that entire humiliation.

BYU in 2004 - GameDay. Perfect season. Busting the BCS - all against your bitter rival? And you dominate? Yes, please!

BYU in 2005 - No one gave Utah a chance in this game and they went down to Provo and won in a classic overtime thriller.

TCU in 2006 - The Frogs finished 11-2 that season - with one of those losses coming to the meh 8-5 Utah Utes

Air Force in 2006 - I wonder how many people remember Louie Sakoda's game-winning field goal as time expired? The look on Fisher DeBerry's face after the kick sailed through the uprights still makes me giddy.

Utes defeat Air Force on a last second kick! (via JazzyUte)

TCU in 2007 - Fun fact: this game marks the last time TCU lost at home.

UNLV in 2008 - Simply for revenge.

TCU in 2008 - Just a classic game with a classic finish.

Utes defeat #11 TCU in the final minute (via JazzyUte)

BYU in 2008 - Just like in '04, but against a better BYU team.

BYU in 2010 - Can you say BLOCK? I knew you could!

I love this one from the 2008 BYU game

Here's a highlights clip from the 2004 Utah/BYU game

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtMF4ZrC9ws

My favorite part is 2:35, where there’s a minute left in the game, Utah is up 45-21, and defensive lineman Steve Fifita comes into the game as a running back, literally throws one of BYU’s defenders on the ground with one hand, straight-arms another guy and runs it in for a 4-yard TD. (That clip is also here, but it’s a grainier version.)

WR Steve Savoy’s 92-yard TD run at 3:36 was pretty awesome too. (Also available here.)

Bo Nagahi

I remember watching this on TV while away at school in Oregon and the commentators went nuts when Nagahi made his tackle at 1:32. That’s how you tackle!!!

Yes! Freaking awesome tackle!

I'm Reminded of Another

I don’t remember what year it was, but I think it was a Utah-TDS game in the mid to late 90s. Utah had either punted or kicked off and the TDS returner was absolutely drilled by a big Utah player. He just planted, feet together, and just leaped at the returner, knocking him back. Can anyone tell me which game that was or which players were involved?

If anyone found my snowboarding gloves after storming the field following the 2004 TDS game, I want them back!

you might be thinking of

Kautai olevao laying out Ronnie Jenkins. Jenkins was on a sweep I think and Olevao just crushed him, causing the ball to come loose. It was sweet.

Its on youtube, look up “Kautai lays out a zoob” and they should have several clips of it.

Not The One

Though that clip is most satisfying to watch.

No, the one I remember was almost definitely on a Utah punt or kick-off. TDS actually had a pretty decent return out of it until the Utah defender squared up and pounced. I remember the TV angle was from behind the Utah guy. He had his feet together and just launched himself. They replayed it a few dozen times.

Another personal favorite for me was the 2004 Wyoming game

I froze my butt off in driving cold November winds at over 7000 feet, but I was one of only a hundred or so Utah fans that actually got to see the game live. The Wyoming stadium had a partial blackout, which took them over an hour and a half to fix, and by the time the lights were back on, KJZZ had already started showing a Harry Potter movie instead of the game and wouldn’t switch back.

Not KJZZ...it was ABC...

ABC locally went to Harry Potter. ABC nationally returned to the game.

We really have pathetic local coverage.

by JazzyUte on Jun 30, 2011 4:23 PM MDT up reply actions

ABC nationally did not return to the game. We got another movie instead

I still get pissed thinking about missing that game knowing it was on national tv.

by uteusmc on Jun 30, 2011 10:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Must've been regionally...

I think the joke here was that some of ABC went back to the game and Utah was stuck watching Harry Potter.

TCU in '08...

and it’s really not that close for me.

Blowouts

I’ll take the two times we crushed byu on our way to the undefeated seasons.

Wyoming 2007

This isn’t my favorite, but one of the most memorable was the 2007 Wyoming game where Utah was blowing out Wyoming going into the half and Kyle decides to do an onside kick to start the third quarter. Joe Glenn then responded with flipping Kyle off from across the sidelines.

by may.davidw on Jun 30, 2011 7:47 PM MDT reply actions

Yes, after Glenn had GUARANTEED a Wyoming win over a Utah team on a roll.

That was a funny day.

BYU '04

This was more than just a game. This was a chance to become the first non-BCS team (as they were called back then) to play in a BCS bowl. There was such a feeling of electricity in the air. Game Day actually came to SLC. It doesn’t seem like such a huge deal now with TCU, Boise St, and Utah all playing in two BCS games a piece, not to mention Hawaii.

But at this time it had never happened. For all the great teams that went undefeated or opened the season appearing like they might, none ever played in a big game. Marshall, Tulane, Fresno St., Boise St., BYU, TCU, Louisville, etc. They all looked like they could have or should have. But this was real. One game and we’re in. Beat your arch rival and crack the system. I’ll never forget the swarm of people rushing the field instantaneously from all sides. Security didn’t even try to stop anyone, they wanted us to capture the emotion of moment and it was an great celebration.

TCU '08

A defensive game for the ages. TCU was a top ten team and looked better than Utah for much of the contest. I was sitting in a bar in the West Village with a few members of the Utah alumni-New York chapter drinking away through serious doubts. The game is over.

Then their place kicker missed a couple of chip shots that left the door open for an amazing drive that will be at or near the top in Ute lore for generations to come. Life continued on a fourth and five. Brian Johnson cool and collected without a hint of panic moves the team down field against a defense that hadn’t budged all night. Then, against all odds, touchdown Utah. We actually had the lead with less than a minute to play. How did that happen? Simply amazing.

This win made the Alabama Sugar Bowl match up possible. Soundly defeating a team that played in the SEC championship and was number #1 in the country for half of the season did wonders for the program. It never would have happened without the TCU fantastic finish.

That CSU/AFA pair in '03 made me a Ute fan.

Prior to the 2003 season, I was a “NCAA tournament Ute basketball fan” and “beat BYU” football fan. But 2003 I had my own car and free tickets to the Cal game. I went to that game and enjoyed it (and later the Oregon game), but when I was glued to the TV, pacing back and forth, wringing my hands over those two games, I was hooked for life.

Arnold Parker returning that fumble against CSU, and Ben Moa with the jump pass in double OT against AFA are memories I’ll never forget.

Why is it that I just realized the connection

between that double OT jump pass and the Tim Tebow jump pass? Man, I’m slow.

Utah also ran that play in the 2008 BYU game...

It happened after Kruger intercepted Hall and tripped at around the four yard line. The very next play, the Utes lined up and ran that jump pass with Asiata to essentially put the game away (I think it put ’em up three touchdowns early in the 4). Great, great, great play.

TCU '08

I will never forget this game! The headline on the Salt Lake Tribune read “Biggest Game Ever” and it lived up to the hype.
I will never forget how loud the stadium was after that 9 yard touchdown pass from BJ to Freddie Brown for the game winning score. The stadium literally shook and it was so loud you could not hear yourself think. In the student section, everyone was jumping around hugging complete strangers, it was fantastic!
The ‘08 tds game was great too, especially the 5 INT’s from Max Hall and stopping the haka.

Happy Pac 12 Day and GO UTES!!!

Read My Signature

TDS 2004, it just doesn’t get any better than that. Everything significant in Utah football that has happened this decade stems from the 2004 season. That team could do no wrong. Toward the end of the season, it wasn’t a question of whether Utah would win or lose, the question became how badly would they embarrass their opponent. I just can’t think of enough descriptors for that night, freezing as it was, when I hit that field, slapped hands with the team, congratulated Alex as he was hoisted around in that silly sombrero… The BCS busting, the Pac-12 invite, none of that happens without the 2004 season. And to celebrate Pac-12 Day, I’m wearing my 2004 MUSS shirt today.

But a close, close second is the 2008 TCU game. I was at RES for that one as well and the sheer tension of that defensive grindfest was unhealthy for those in attendance with heart conditions. But that last drive, the winning touchdown, the final interception, the rollercoaster of emotions in that game between elation and frustration… It was an utter shame that one of those teams had to lose because TCU deserved a BCS game that year. That game proved that Kyle was at least Urban’s equal, and that heart and “scrappiness” can yield results just as well as talent.

Granted if we’re talking favorite moments while in the MWC, and not just games against MWC, I’d have to say 2 January, 2009. I could watch that first quarter again, and again, and again… ( though the hook-and-ladder four years earlier is almost as entertaining. )

If anyone found my snowboarding gloves after storming the field following the 2004 TDS game, I want them back!

Funny, TCU '09 and '10 aren't on this list...

…but those are two of my favorite MWC games.

TCU and Utah had a good thing building; it’s too bad the book closes already on such a promising rivalry…

Good luck in the Big East. Perhaps we’ll meet again in a bowl game or a home-and-home series.
