The MWC adopts new evil corporate logo

This ain't your pop's Mountain West Conference.

Today, the conference announced its new logo and also released a video that is essentially a highlight reel of Utah losing to showcase the newly minted Mountain West Conference 2.0.

The logo, though, is interesting.

Mwc_new_medium

That's what $250,000 will get you. A sterile logo that looks more at home in a 1980s science fiction movie where the evil corporation, using death bots, tries to overtake the world.

Gotta say, I'm not impressed.

Unless they're going for that authoritarian, we'll use the world's weather for our diabolical plans look, then they're right on the mark.

But for a college athletics conference? A swing and a miss.

I don't think it's that bad.

It’s definitely unique. And, hey, it’s still better than the new Big 10 logo, and probably for a fraction of the cost. ;)

its terrible. 250.000 dollars. i could have had some high school kids make one and the winning team would get a picnic.

i just saved 249,800 dollars.

Anderson Silva would never fight "Bones". He is too scared to fight the real P4P champion. Nick Diaz, the man who will prove to the MMA world that he is the best WW in the world. Still public enemy #1 and enjoying every minute of it.

From the release.
The unique logo itself is a strong symbol of a league on the rise, invoking comparisons to stately campus buildings and the Rock of Gibraltar. It is unlike any other conference mark. Reflecting the expanded membership from the mountains to the ocean and addressing the previous prevalence of mountain imagery and word marks, the letters representing ‘Mountain’ and ‘West’ are given equal weight and dimension.

Really, because other than the name of the conference, the new logo does not give me a feeling of either Mountains, or oceans.

by UnHoly Ram on Jun 6, 2011 3:29 PM MDT reply actions

Well at least they said it was unlike any other conference logo

The only problem with that is it’s because it blows to badly. Is the MWC really that poorly run to come up with this horrible idea?

by ev on Jun 6, 2011 3:57 PM MDT up reply actions

No...the MWC really is that poorly run...

You only have to look no further than their television deal that has handicapped the conference since 2006.

Dr. Hill

After reading a post in the CU blog, I learned that Chris Hill had a big hand on developing the train wreck that is the MWC network.

Rock of Gibraltar - Since that's in the MWC footprint

Typical marketing BS.

Logo design guys: “We came up with this logo.”

Conference: “What does it represent?”

Logo design guys: “Uh… erm… buildings… uh, campus buildings. And rocks… like, maybe the Rock of Gibraltar.”

Conference: “That is so awesome!”

I keep accidentally eating my pets. Maybe I should get something less appetizing, like a cat instead of a Twinkie.

wow, I hadn't heard that

this has to be the most laughable description of the new logo anyone could ever come up with

by pack_fan on Jun 13, 2011 2:35 AM MDT up reply actions

lame

could be any conference’s logo. at least the old logo had mountains in it

by utahmanami on Jun 6, 2011 4:49 PM MDT reply actions

Who the hell test marketed this one?

If this was the winner wouldn’t it be VERY interesting to see the losing logos? I am soooo glad we left these guys behind.

I think it was the Oompa Loompas.

Losing Logos

mwcconnection.com has a post that shows a lot of the logos that ended up on the cutting room floor. There are several that are WAY better than that one.

I would strongly disagree

In fact I think Jazzy’s tweet early was about right on: “You start with awful, you end up with awful”

Horrible

I’m glad we got out when we did.

by UteinBrooklyn on Jun 6, 2011 6:22 PM MDT reply actions

Funny!!!

I’m so grateful we’re leaving that world.

by willlouty on Jun 6, 2011 7:24 PM MDT reply actions

I am glad we are out.

I guess I will always follow the MWC conference, because I can’t forget our roots. I will always root for Wyoming, SDSU, CSU, AF and New Mexico when they aren’t playing us or a PAC-12 school. That being said after watching the MWC press conference, I am sure glad we are out of that conference and in the PAC-12. Talk about a lame logo.

And as for all the hype, like the conference “is reloading not re-building” geez. But, I guess I can’t expect to say anything negative. It is their livelihood after all.

24 days more until we are officially in the PAC-12!! Can’t wait for PAC-12 football media at the Rose Bowl!

by Utah-UCLA alum on Jun 6, 2011 7:51 PM MDT reply actions

I'm pretty much in the same boat...

as far as hoping to see those schools do well, as long as they are not playing the PAC12.

That doesn’t change the fact that the logo they came up with is the stupidest thing I have ever seen in my life, it reminds me of… The Hudsucker Proxy for some reason? Maybe it’s because the MWC is like that guy sliding down the window he just tried to jump out of?

SO GLAD we are in the PAC now!

Oh and "The Rock of Gibraltar"????

way to go marketing team… those people deserve a raise, unbelievable creativity displayed there.

by tacoman on Jun 6, 2011 9:21 PM MDT up reply actions

um...

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little after seeing that.

by Classless Ute on Jun 6, 2011 9:09 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

Oh my hell...

Really? I wish I would have known they were accepting concepts ideas. I’m sure my 8-year-old neice could have come up with something competative. Seriously, I half expect a press release tomorrow – “April fools! Here’s the real logo…”

That’s terrible!

by darklightning8 on Jun 7, 2011 1:33 AM MDT reply actions

Okay so I just watched the video...

and I can’t quit LAUGHING! The highlight reels with some guy repeating, “What’s a winner look like?” And then at the end: “It looks like this.” and that hidious logo breaks through the wall! I honestly couldn’t contain myself!

by darklightning8 on Jun 7, 2011 1:41 AM MDT reply actions

My favorite part of the video...

Pretty sad that the only highlight for Boise was beating only the third or fourth best Utah team in the last 6 years. Go Las Vegas Bowl!!! What a great reward for a great season!!!
Good riddance.

by SC_Ute on Jun 7, 2011 6:18 AM MDT up reply actions

NOOOOO

I wanted to see it and get “video has been removed by the user”

by scotty256 on Jun 11, 2011 4:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah

I also noticed they seemed to show several Boise highlights in last year’s Vegas Bowl. Coincidence? Maybe, but I somehow doubt it.

by darklightning8 on Jun 7, 2011 7:26 AM MDT reply actions

Oh No!

The Mountain West has come from the future to destroy us, well the 80’s version of the future anyway.

by H2O_UTE on Jun 7, 2011 2:54 PM MDT reply actions

I have a much better looking logo for the Mountain West Conference…… The OLD ONE!

by DougUTE on Jun 7, 2011 5:01 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Now see?

Aren’t you glad you get to show off the pretty Pac-12 shield now?

Dear Pit Crew,

Lack of logo

MWC showing a little animosity towards Utah and “the team down south” for leaving the conference by not putting mountains that resemble the Wasatch mtns. in the new logo? Well theres actually no resemblance in the old logo but kind of funny that mountains are not in what your name represents. The old logo was great and would have been easy to just refine it making it better with more mountains in the background. Utah and the team down south made the Mtn west conference what it is today.
