Pac-12 media day is here
In the old Mountain West Conference, the conference's media day came and went with little fanfare. In fact, outside the conference's markets, it was very much an under the radar affair.
That changes this time around. Utah's move to the Pac-12 has opened up a great deal of new doors and one of those will be witnessed this week - as the Utes will get some mighty nice publicity from the college football world.
Today's media day begins at 10 a.m. Salt Lake time with Cal's Jeff Tedford taking the podium to get things going.
Each coach and player's press conference will be streamed live from the official website - with Gus Johnson hosting.
Kyle Whittingham will address the media members last, at around 1 p.m. Salt Lake time.
Of course, this is just the beginning of a week long process that will take all Pac-12 coaches back east for a bicoastal media tour. The schedule for this week's events after the jump...
On Wednesday, the Pac-12 South coaches will be at the ESPN studios for a round of interviews with the World Wide Leader in Sports. Here's Whittingham's schedule:
9:10am ESPN RISE Taped Segment 9:40am ESPN.com Page 2 ESPN.com/Page2 10:10am ESPNU Taped Segment 10:30am ESPN3.com Taped Segment 11:00am Scott Van Pelt Radio Show Taped Segment 11:20am First Take (live) ESPN2 11:40am ESPNU College Football Podcast Taped Segment 12:05pm GameDay Taped Segment 12:45pm The Herd (live) ESPNU 1:15pm College Football Live Taped Segment 1:40pm SportsCenter (live) ESPN 1:50pm Twitter chat Twitter.com/SportsCenter
So a pretty busy day for Whittingham. To end the day, all the Pac-12 coaches, along with Larry Scott, will address the East Coast media in New York City.
On Thursday, while the Pac-12 North coaches are making their rounds at ESPN, the Pac-12 South coaches will be in New York visiting many New York-based media outlets.
Offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom is set to join Whittingham for the press conference tomorrow.
Fall camp will open August 4th, so that means we're pretty much diving into the thick of things in anticipation for the start of the season.

Well Boulder isn't anywhere near where they've got the logo, either...
I think it’s to signify the partnership with the other Pac-12 South schools – since both are north of every other program in the division.
Is Oregon even on the map?
And yeah, that was dumb. I assume they did it so that CU and Utah would look like they were “south” of Cal and Stanford, even though we’re north of both of those schools by about 200 miles (SLC is at 40° 45’ 38", CU is at 40° 0’ 54", Stanford is at 37° 25’ 27", Cal is at 37° 52’ 18", and degrees of latitude are about 70 miles apart).

I think it's a matter of perception.
The Bay Area lies in “Northern California”, while Utah and Colorado (especially Utah) are perceived to be more “southwestern” than “northwestern”. It’s one of those things where associations are made and they remain pervasive even against logic. One does not envision Cal or Stanford and think “southern” anything. Same goes for Utah, nobody links Salt Lake with the Pacific Northwest. Both Utah and Colorado just have more in common with Arizona in the collective unconscious of the average American. And the Bay Area will forever be associated more with the Pacific Northwest than it ever will be with the metro “Southland” of L.A.

Oh, I completely agree.
Cal and Stanford fit in better with Oregon and Washington than they do with Arizona and Utah (Boulder is a pretty hippie town, even if the rest of Colorado is not). But we’re smart people, you don’t have to pretend CU is in Pueblo and the U of U is in St. George. The fact that we’re north of the other schools doesn’t mean we have to be in the North division.
And is Oregon even on the map? I didn’t see them.

Oregon.
I see Oregon now, they just don’t come through against that blue background in the photo very well.

Very exciting day
I really can’t wait for fall camp…..it is going to be a FUN year.
Thanks for the schedule Jazzy, it will be a lot of fun to see what Whitt has to say.

It definitely is an exciting time, but...
don’t expect too much from Coach Whitt. The man has mastered coach-speak, and past history has me not looking for much new out of him. Sure, he’ll talk about how great it is to be in the Pac-12 and how excited they are to have Coach Chow, but mostly he’ll say things like, “We’ll do what we always do: work hard, prepare the best we can and give our young men the tools to be the best they can.” Or something similar. Which is awesome, because with Whitt it comes from the heart, so don’t get me wrong on that. He’s just too prudent to get in front of the cameras and start spouting off about “national championships in a few years” and other such arrogant hokum.
I’m more interested in what Bergstrom has to say. I’m sure he’ll be well-coached with prepared statements, but I’ll bet he’ll be so enthused it’ll come across in a very positive light.

Whit Updates from Media Day
Keith McGill arrived on campus yesterday.
And while I think he should be allowed to stay with the team, but never take the field again, it looks like Nai Fotu has done everything asked of him and could have his suspension lifted in a few weeks.
I will say while I don’t like the idea of Nai playing, I commend him for his work and really hope he has turned his life around.
