Baylor WR Josh Gordon could be transferring to Utah

Josh Gordon, the wide receiver from Baylor, has left their program and is interested in joining the Utah football team, sources out of Waco report.

A sophomore last year, Gordon was the Bears' second-leading receiver in 2010. He was named to the third team All-Big 12 and finished the season ranked 13th in the Big 12 in total receiving yards.

So, we'll see how this develops. If true, Gordon would certainly be a good get for the program.

It should be pointed out, though, that Gordon has had some trouble while at Baylor. In October, he was arrested outside a Taco Bell for possession of marijuana.

But if this rumor bears out, Coach Whittingham must feel he's put the past behind him and is ready to play some football.

As I always say, the coaches know better than I...

but one would think they’d be looking for o-linemen right now.

Hard to turn away an elite receiver who shows interest...

I’m sure the coaches are combing over any possible o-line improvements, but when this falls into your lap, only a fool would say, “no thanks…”

True...

and I have no idea how they go about finding potential transfers, or even if they go looking for them, but I’m sure they have “feelers” out there for o-line prospects. I’m also sure they have scholarships set aside in case they’re needed for such transfers, etc.

last year.....

Mo Lee and Dexter Ransom both just showed up for camp. Obviously, this year its a little late for that on the O-line, but you never know.

I know some Baylor fans...

from another site and they say he has great speed, size, and hands. Hasn’t used his redshirt year so he’d do that this year and have 2 years left.

They said he has some serious character issues though. Should be interesting.

6'4" 220 lbs Yes, Yes, here's your Utah Jersey, go DEEP!

We’ll have to see how he turns out…will being at Utah keep him out of trouble? Maybe, just don’t have him and Nai Fotu be roomies

I don't really care

If he’s smoking a blunt at 60 yards downfield, so long as he drops it to catch the damn ball.

That’s not really true. I take great pride in how clean and sharp this team is; I trust the coaches and the players to help keep him on the straight and narrow.

Strike Two

I don’t know about this guy. I think the coaching staff is in the best position to make an evaluation. There is a good reason Baylor had with him.

The odds don’t look good as problem players remain problem players. I think being in the Pac-12, we can afford to be selective. We didn’t jump at Tate Forcier and he probably would have come to Utah……

I'm not sure that's always true that "problem players remain problems".

Marty Johnson was a problem that figured it out, so (hopefully) is Nai Fotu.

Of course, we have our examples of problems remaining problems (Marquis Wilson), but we’ve had success helping troubled kids put it together.

Sometimes A Change Of Scenery does wonders

As does getting around a different group of people. Getting out of Texas, into a more wholesome area could be enough to help straighten him out.

I’m not going to claim that the Utes are as upstanding and straight laced as those down south, and I’ll guarantee their are players on the team who not only drink, but smoke the wacky tobacky.

That said, I also know the type of person that Coach Whit strives to make these players. As much as I have a personal problem with what Nai Fotu did, I’m glad that Coach Whit has been there to straighten out his life. Just like Bronco has down with Kyle Van Oy Down South. For this reason I don’t think Whit would take on a player just because he’s a tremendous talent. If he came here, I’m sure he’d be on a strict program just like Nai is, and KVY was down south.

Good points

I think Utah is a good place for a kid trying to go straight. They are surrounded by good influences that help encourage good behaviour. Yet at the same time not so uptight that they don’t allow you to recover from a past mistake.

The coaches won’t put up with somebody not willing to try. If they try with a good attitude to fix issues there is a place at the table.

Pot

I understand that college athletes are held to a higher standard, but honestly isn’t smoking pot at a Taco Bell considered a right of passage for most college students? The guy didn’t hold up liquor store or anything. I think it might be a stretch that a single incident involving a pretty mild narcotic constitute a character issue.

Fotu's transgression is worse

I don’t support smoking weed. Never done it, never will. Don’t understand the desire. That said, I think what Fotu did was much worse.

Also

I’m a bit more worried about the violation of team rules. Wish we knew what that was.

Baylor

Baylor has a reputation as being a pretty strict school they are in some respects the Babtist version of BYU. So it could be anything.

My dad was narcotics officer for most of my life growing up and he was often more pissed off about having to enforce marijuana laws than people smoking it. I’m not going to debate the morality or practicality of marijuana use and policy, but I am going to say. That using something so commonly accepted and found on every college campus in the US is hardly a concern that this guy is going to be a Terrell Owens in the locker room.

This is a done deal according to the Des News.

Josh Gordon has transferred and began practicing with the team on Monday. He’ll have to sit out this year, but let’s hope he can get his off the field issues under control and be a big play-maker for the team next year.
