Updated depth chart released as Utes ready for season

Utah football released an updated depth chart today and there have been some significant changes since the original that was released prior to camp.

Most notable:

Joape Pela has moved to the OL to fill in due to depth issues. He originally was set at the defensive line, but will now back up Tevita Stevens

Utah also added Miles Mason, a junior college transfer who's expected to back up John Cullen at left tackle, while Vyncent Jones will start at left guard.

Other news of note:

Luke Matthews, Dallin Rogers and Shawn Asiata all have been pegged as starters at full back. John White, who had a solid camp, will start at running back, while he'll be backed up by Tauni Vakapuna

Reggie Dunn has surpassed Dres Anderson at receiver and will join Ryan Lacy in kickoff returns. Griff McNabb is set to return punts.

Percy Taumoelau and Isaac Asiata are expected to miss the season opener against Montana State

Kinda surprised about the co-starters at kicker.

Seems like Peterson had the better overall camp, although Marsh finished strong.

I wonder if this is a distance issue.

I could see Peterson being used for shorter field goal attempts, while Marsh is used for longer field goal attempts and kick offs.

Anyone know...

What this means for Harvey Langi? Will he redshirt or possibly transfer? I’d hate to lose that guy

by Classless Ute on Aug 22, 2011 8:06 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

transfer? seriously?

5-star recruits at Oklahoma and USC don’t transfer as true freshmen.

He’ll probably redshirt.

by BoylenOver on Aug 22, 2011 8:21 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree.

He’s going to redshirt. Vakapuna is a senior, which means Harvey would be in the running next year.

by pappyman on Aug 22, 2011 9:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah...

It wasn’t a guarantee he’d start heading into camp. He was just a possibility due to the rather uncertainty at this position. He’s not going to transfer because he didn’t get the top spot. With John White being a junior and, as you said, Vakapuna a senior, Langi is set heading into next year and beyond.

He just needs type to develop. I’m sure he knows this.

by JazzyUte on Aug 22, 2011 9:13 PM MDT up reply actions

I've stated before..

..That Langi Redshirting is actually the best possible outcome for the Utes. This means Langi will still have 4 years of solid production, and probably be the starter/co-starter for at least three of them.

Starting TB

Here is to what I hope will be a Tony Dorsett type of year for John White IV and to what I hope will be a year of growth for our next great back Harvey Langi.

Also, does anyone know what we are doing with the fullbacks?

Are they going to use them in different situations? I could see Matthews being used as more of an offensive threat (similar to the BYU H-Back), while Dallin Rogers and Shawn Asiata being utilized more in blocking situations and such.

by pappyman on Aug 22, 2011 9:19 PM MDT reply actions

Matthews

I sure Matthews will be the catch out of the backfield guy and also when he is in will line up as an additional receiver.

Griff McNabb

…is 5’7’’ and 160? Has this kid put on a single pound since he joined last year? He may be elusive but I’m a bit concerned he won’t be able to take the occasional punishment returning kicks and fumble. Hopefully I’m wrong. Maybe he’ll use his elusiveness to make guys miss.

OTHER NOTES: Good to see Coach Whitt is deepening the O-Line. Is Blechen really 230? I’ve heard he is still 215 and some have said he might not be able to plug up holes and stand his ground against 310+ lineman. Is Langi going mission bound at the end of the season? I’m excited to see Dres, dude seems like a baller. I may actually rather see Greg Bird at FS given his experience than Eric Rowe. I’m sure he’s a tier or two lower athletically than Rowe but I tend to prefer experience to athleticism at Safety. Hopefully he plays a lot regardless.

by SanFranUte on Aug 23, 2011 10:04 AM MDT reply actions

Notes

Langi is not mission bound. Isaac Asiata however is.

I like Greg Bird, but honestly, he’s just not starter material. He’s a good role player, and he’ll deliver a major hit, but there’s a reason he hasn’t become a starter in his 4 years here.

From what I’ve heard is Blechen is at 230, and he and Reilly will not only be playing LB, but you may see them a couple times with their hand on the ground.

I was unaware of Asiata

i knew he was LDS (he is always quoting scriptures on twitter; at least he was when I was tweeting).

Still Does

He still tweets a lot of scriptures, but he also tweets a lot about how excited he is to go on a mission.

He also seems to be a bit more of a sensitive soul based on some of the other stuff he tweets. But honestly that’s better than what some of the other Utes tweets.

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 23, 2011 11:41 AM MDT up reply actions

Griff has the best

hands on the team as far as fielding punts. With Shaky, it was literally always exciting. He might break a big return. He might fumble the ball away.

Griff is going to catch the ball and hang on more often. Keep in mind, he returned a punt to the house in the last scrimmage, just sayin’…..

Greg Bird can give you some reps as a hybrid safety/linebacker. He fits in well with the running teams. But mostly, he will be used on special teams to light up chumps, wax suckers, and smoke fools.

I Loved the Kickoff Team

My HS coach gave me very specific specific instructions: “Take out as many blockers as you can.” I know most players want to play, they want to get recognized. But some recognize they’re good, but not great, and are happy filling the utility slots. I would have loved more reps on the field, but coming back to the sideline after de-cleating two members of a blocking wall and getting a “Good job!” from the HC makes your night.

If Bird has a similar mentality, he’ll fill his role and have fun doing it. Hey, there are worse ways to help get a college degree!

If anyone found my snowboarding gloves after storming the field following the 2004 TDS game, I want them back!

that hit he laid on that guy from UNLV last year

during Shakys return still gets me pumped.

Griff

Griff Mcnab played well last year. He didn’t do what Smithson did (make would be takler’s look like idiots), but he didn’t do what Smithson did either (fumble balls).

Mcnab did it last year when Smithson was out.

That kid has to have guts, I think punt returns are the hardest, you stand there and wait for the ball, all the while thinking about the guy who is about to cream you.

My hat is off to that man.

another interesting note

Kyle Gunther from 1280 (who again, as goofy as he is, has the best eye for what is actually happening on the field) mentioned yesterday that Nate Fakahafua is actually lining up as an outside linebacker when he is in there and the Utes are running a 3-4. Very similar to what Koa used to do. Nate is an animal and is making it impossible for the coaches to keep him off the field.

Josh Gordon

What, if anything, should we make of what appears to be an official transfer to Utah by this guy? He’s supposedly a great receiver and obviously he has to sit out this season.

From the DNews: "Former Baylor wide receiver Josh Gordon has transferred to Utah and practiced with the Utes on Monday . . . "

Might be a good idea to read the story Jazzy linked below.

As discussed in this link: (Baylor WR Josh Gordon Transferring to Utah), we are hopeful he can contribute while being cautious about his discipline . . . issues.

Per Coach Whitt on ESPN 700's Interview:

Dres tweaked his knee, so the reflection in the depth chart isn’t entirely accurate. Named Dres and Reggie as “1 and 1A at the Z receiver position”.

I like it. Bill Guerin’s uppercut is so awesome it wins fights he’s not even in.

Before people freak out...

The injury wasn’t bad. He just was being played less as a precaution.

Where is the Rugby star?

Any idea what position that guy will play

by utahmanami on Aug 23, 2011 5:40 PM MDT reply actions

Thretton Palamo.

He’s a RB, but he’s 3rd on the depth chart right now and might redshirt (although if you watch the video on whit’s website, he makes a couple of huge plays).

by displacedute on Aug 23, 2011 6:06 PM MDT up reply actions

the Nigerian Nightmare

As a similar big back, I guess Thretton is not the second coming of Okoye. I agree with Coach Whit, we still need to get his talent out on the gridiron – somewhere. Perhaps LB may be his calling.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Aug 23, 2011 8:54 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't know if he has enough of a mean streak for LB

My hope is that he learns his blocking and blitz pickups and turns out to be a phenomenal RB. Dude is downright dangerous in an open field.

Moving Positions

Whit has hinted at having him move positions to get him on the field, but Honestly I’m not sure the likelihood of that. Not sure what other position he could play that would take advantage of his skills, where his rugby transition wouldn’t be just as difficult.

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 24, 2011 8:10 AM MDT up reply actions

DE is the only one I can think of.

Put him in as a pass rusher, but LB is too complicated for him to pick up during the season. Maybe we’ll see him blowing people up on special teams, but realistically he’s going to be limited this year barring injury to players above him (knock on wood).
