Utes 28th in preseason Coaches' Poll

The USA Today Coaches' Poll is out and Utah is ranked 28th, just outside the top-25.

Oregon and Stanford are the only two Pac-12 teams ranked, though it should be pointed out that SC is ineligible to receive votes in this poll due to their sanctions.

Arizona State is 26th, while Arizona is 32nd and BYU 43rd.

This marks the first time since the start of the '08 season that Utah is not ranked in the preseason Coaches' Poll. They were ranked 28th then too.

The entire poll after the jump...

8 SEC teams, 2 PAC-12 teams

There is something seriously wrong with that.

yeah...

Not to mention a Texas team that went 5-7 last yeah. This had better be bulletin board material

Yet Another Reason

No polls should come out before week 5.

that lost to Colorado last year

Yes, it’s very pathetic. I’m hoping the AP does a better job and the Coaches will fix their next version in week 2.

Fully agreed

Preseason polls are total crap, and too many coaches are just looking out for themselves and their own conference.

Get used to it....

…it’s been going on ever since the PAC 10 went to round robin scheduling.

You guys gotta like 28. That’s a nice position to start from given the way you played in the Vegas Bowl and all the unknowns switching conferences. I wouldn’t mind 28.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

True Enough

The losses last year were very embarrassing and I’m sure voters remember them. I had Utah pegged for 30 – 35 so 28 is gravy.

I think

That most of the BCS problems would be fixed by 1) waiting until Week 5 or 6 to poll and 2) having a mandatory rotating cross-conference schedule (1 year, Pac-12 plays MWC, BIG-12, and SEC, the next year they play ACC, WAC, and Big East).

by Joseph Silverzweig on Aug 4, 2011 3:04 PM MDT reply actions

Waiting until week 5 ain't happening

News sources will rank team because it’s a long off-season. I think it helps quantify expectations for teams to start the season. However, the polls that matter just need to be comfortable with drastically changing their initial guesses as the season progresses. Besides, how much more do we know about Arkansas in week 4 after they open the season at home against Missouri St, New Mexico and Troy?

The ultimate fix for minimizing the importance of the beauty contest (polls) is playoffs, of course. But since that ain’t happening, it would be nice to have your #2 suggestion of requiring OOC match-ups between Big Six teams. Sure would hurt all those cupcake lovers out there.

I'll take third in "Others Receiving Votes"

Much more important is where Utah finishes the year.

Started 28th in '08, ranked in '09 and '10...

I’ll take ’08’s finish in a heartbeat! ;-)

No sweat

28th ranked to start the season. No big deal.

We are with the big boys now, we don’t have to worry about starting so far down the polls in the pre-season that we have to hurdle too many teams and count on help with other teams above us losing throughout the season.

Win our games and we will deservedly end up high in the polls in December.

Rose Bowl is all that matters now. Not where voter Jon Wilner has his bias.

I'm ok with the fact that we aren't in the top 25.

I don’t think the utes need a bigger x on their back. As the new guys in the conference, each school is going to make it their goal to “welcome” us to football with the big boys! Plus I like the fact that we have to earn the ranking! I think 28 is actually a compliment all thing considering! Let’s prove it on the field.

by UtesFootball on Aug 4, 2011 8:45 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

Absolutely!

I am hesitant to start Utah so high because of one reason: Pressure.

There is absolutely NO benefit to starting the year with more pressure than there needs to be. Preseason polls don’t mean squat, so why pile on more pressure to win?

If I were among the teams in the top 25, I’d be that much more nervous.

Gimme #28 and then let’s just climb. If we’re worth the top 25, we will be there soon enough!

Two games

We start the season 2-0… we’ll be ranked. =]

by Joseph Silverzweig on Aug 5, 2011 6:16 AM MDT up reply actions

This is the first year I would agree with this...

I guess not needing to stress about where you’re ranked is a benefit of being in a BCS conference
