Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

Harvey Langi tops depth chart at running back...but don't read into it

Harvey Langi, who's battling Thretton Palamo and John White IV for the running back spot, found himself at the top of the depth chart today. However, Kyle Whittingham said it doesn't mean much, as the coaching staff is just shuffling the deck chairs at the moment.

The real separation could come after Utah goes through a few scrimmages.

Tauni Vakapuna has also played his way into the battle and Whittingham calls him a viable candidate to lead Utah's rushing attack.

Other than that, practice seems to be going as well as hoped. Jordan Wynn's arm continues to hold up while Keith McGill proves to be one of the early standouts of fall camp.

Utah will hold its first scrimmage this Thursday and hopefully it will tell us how close this team is heading into the start of the season, which is now less than a month away.

Here's the updated depth chart for your viewing pleasure.

I’m glad they finally some headway at rb

Are you sure he was safe? It looked like an out to the entire statium. Well bad call Blue.

Cool stuff

Always fun to read these things. I think at this point, they are used to light a fire under someone who the coaches think has more than they are giving.

Ill be honest guys, without Benji for sure and Po’u (most likely, at least in my eyes), I am worried about our O-line. At leas the guards. I like Brenner, but I am not sure yet about anyone else…..

Solid starters, no depth

What really hurts without Benji and Po’u is the lack of depth. I think our 1’s are fine. Especially at the tackles and the guard spot with Brenner.

But if, may I say when, some of the OL start getting nicked up we may be in trouble.

yep, I know we have a lot of talent

but I just don’t think a lot of the backups are ready in case something happens.

Brenner injured

Looks like Sam Brenner will be out about three weeks with an Elbow Injury. The Utes have moved Latu Heimuli to guard.

Po-u is looking less likely

From the press release:

Freshman linebacker Jared Norris has reported to camp, replacing JC offensive lineman Po’u Palelei, who has not been admitted to school.

If he does come, it will have to be after camp.

According to the Trib, Whit said Po'u will come by the end of the week or never
Freshman linebacker Jared Norris has reported to camp while the Utes continue to wait on junior college transfer Po’u Palelei. If he isn’t in camp by the end of the week, it’s unlikely he’ll join the Utes, Whittingham said.

(Story here.)

So my assumption that his camp spot was taken was wrong.

Psychological

Agreed about lighting fires. Two years ago Wynn lost out the QB battle against Cain after being head to head with Louks too. Things will shake out in due time.

I saw Po’u Palelei wasn’t admitted into school. I suppose that means he is done like Benji. While I am disappointed, I have heard, okay read online (horrible source amounting to rumor) they both would have had to drop some pounds and were not in game playing shape. Their availability would have been limited. We’ll see if the run game suffers as a result. The guards will be young and raw, but Utah has done a great job with developing linemen.

Denham out indefinitely doesn’t sound good. Earlier reports were day-today. Too bad.

Glad to see Nai and Heimuli back in the mix and that Lei Talamaivao will be around too.

Wouldn't say Wynn Lost out to Cain

So much as I think the Coaching staff over thought it.

Cain go the nod not because he was better, but because the Staff thought he could handle the pressure of D-1 better than Wynn.

As for Denham it was announced the day after the injury we were looking at 2-3 weeks.

Personally I think this is just a move to see how the three players react to the news of the depth chart.

Not sure I buy Tauni as a viable candidate, although I wouldn’t be heartbroken at all if he moved his way into the top 3, or even the top 2 and allowed us to throw a redshirt on one of the three.

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 8, 2011 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

I have scratched my head over that one.

I think the plan was for Corbin Louks to win the job, with Cain as a back up and Wynn as a redshirt. Louks stunk and had an attitude. Cain won the job but couldn’t move the ball. I think they wanted to do everything in their power to redshirt wynn, but itw asn’t happening.

Mostly Agree

I think Louks was supposed to win, but then proved to everyone he couldn’t actually throw, and so the team shedded some dead weight.

I really don’t think it was a case of Cain winning the job, more, as like you said, the staff Really Really wanted to Redshirt Wynn, (Part of what I think was a plan already in place to move to a Pro Style offense this year, and shed the spread) and so went with the lesser QB just because he had experience, and to keep the overall plan in shape.

Then they realized that Cain just really had not command of the offense.

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 8, 2011 3:29 PM MDT up reply actions

I remember the 09 opener against USU

Cain completed his first 7 passes. Most of them were slants and screens. I remember saying to myself “this is never going to work against TCU, or any half decent opponent” and sure enough, it proved to be true.

Cain’s line of thinking in 09 was “Reed, Reed, Reed, he’s covered, time to scramble.”

by BigBenSportsGuy on Aug 8, 2011 3:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, Cain was selected mostly because of experience...

Granted, he hadn’t played a snap of FBS ball, but he had college experience and the staff thought, with a rebuilding year on offense, that the steady hand would be better than throwing Wynn out there and watching him get savaged.

Was it the right move? Hard to say. Wynn might’ve been better by the BYU game that year, so the Utes could have seen a one-win improvement – but that improvement probably doesn’t alter 2010 much, especially if Wynn suffers through the same injury.

Cain did what we wanted him to do: win and though he didn’t do it spectacularly, he still managed to go 9-2.

Ultimately, choosing Cain didn’t hurt the program and I doubt Wynn starting all of ’09 would have dramatically changed the overall record the last two years.

So, essentially, I think we’re looking at 20-6 or 21-5 over the last two years, but nothing extremely different.

Fortunately, we got through that change better than BYU. The way Bronco handled Heaps and Nelson was awful and though they rallied at the end of the season to finish respectable, it still was a mess through much of September and October.

Surprised about Dave Kruger

Dave Kruger listed 2nd behind Aiono is a bit of a surprise, considering that reports about Aiono haven’t exactly been glowing the past couple years.

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 8, 2011 3:16 PM MDT reply actions

they share the top spot.

When both names are in bold, it indicates a tie. I will be interested to see who wins that one. The trib an article on Aiono last week, he has gotten in shape this year.

Yea I noticed the OR after I posted it.

Still I’m surprised to see Aiono finally turning it on.

Big James

James Aiono was a 5 star constellation recruit. A real supernova at one time as the Number 1 junior college defensive line prospect. He had trouble keeping up in the classroom. Now that he has been doing his homework, this is the chance for him to show that he can play on Sundays.

As an underclassman, Dave is like an early Dom Perignon. Next year is when he comes of age. Having two good guys spelling each other on the D- line isn’t a bad thing, like it is at QB.

Also

Dallin Rogers or Luke Matthews is still listed as a Fullback.

No mention of Shawn Asiata at Fullback

Anyone know what SQ means?

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 8, 2011 3:18 PM MDT reply actions

SQ=practice squad

just means they were non-scholarship practice squad members last year.

Shreve Question

Since it’s looking like Hays is taking a stranglehold on the backup question, does any know if Shreve is eligible for a redshirt, even though he “grey shirted”?

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 8, 2011 3:37 PM MDT reply actions

I think he should be.....

The only other person in that boat is Sean Fitzgerald. He greyshirted in 06. Went on a mission for 07 and 08. redshirted in 2009.

Depth Chart and Starting Tailback

I can’t recall with certainty the last every down tailback that we have had (perhaps Jamal or Mike Anderson), but Harvey can be that one stop shop guy. He has the power to run people over and the 40 speed to outrun a number of Pac-12 and OOC DBs. In my estimation, John and Thretton are the nifty and power back kind of guys respectively. Thretton a faster version of Matt Asiata and John a smaller version of Eddie Wide. After kast year’s experience, I am hoping for something new. And if Harvey can hang on to the loaf and not fumble, I would like him to be our guy. I saw Vakapuna last year. He is a fine fill in and has play making ability, but isn’t a feature back.

As for our secondary with two starters at 5’9" we seem a bit small and subject to some WR and outside contain manhandling. I know McCain wasn’t the biggest either and he is playing in the NFL, but Black at least doesn’t have the cover skills like McCain – at least he didn’t during the TCU and Notre Dame games. I hope Scalley has been working hard with him. Oh well, I know they have fast straight line speed so that is some consolation.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Aug 8, 2011 4:32 PM MDT reply actions

Anytime Asiata went down.

Wasn’t meant to be but Eddie Wide was an every down back in 2009, and Mack was an every down back in 2007. Of course neither were supposed to be the every down back those years, as that was supposed to be Asiata, but then Matt got hurt.

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 8, 2011 4:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Asiata

Matt was a good team leader. He also proved himself when we ABSOLUTELY NEEDED that inch on 4th and we better go for it.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Aug 8, 2011 6:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Thretton has good 40 speed.

I think he’s just not as used to football.

Agreed

He is a big dude and with head of steam, I’d hate to be on the scout team trying to stop Thretton. (as I recall cleats on chest from HS days).

I Don't Think It's a Big Transition

Yes, the two games are played very differently. But I hear he already has that field vision to see open lanes and I think that’s the most important thing for him. The coaches say he’s a 3.75 GPA student so that tells me he’s smart enough and hard working enough to make those mental adaptations between the two games.

If anyone found my snowboarding gloves after storming the field following the 2004 TDS game, I want them back!

by RedJaron on Aug 9, 2011 9:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Open Lanes are probably the biggest benefit of being from Rugby.

Rugby you must spot the open lanes, so I’m sure that is the easy part of the transition.

What worries me most about Thretton, and all the running backs honestly, is blocking/blitz pick up.

by UnHoly Ram on Aug 9, 2011 9:45 AM MDT up reply actions

Good point, I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the biggest foci for camp.
