A couple of thoughts as I went through it:

-I will hereafter refrain  from giving depth chart thoughts.  It leads to irrelevant debates.  At this point in the season, we know who the playmakers are and there is no need to discuss what a printed report says about who fits where.  Because of my firm commitment to not making any comments on the depth chart, I will refrain from pointing out how silly it is to list Tauni Vakapuna as the second string running back.

-Several players made their season (and career in some cases) debuts this past week.  Among them were Griff Robles, Jon Hays, Terrell Reese, Kapua Sai, Percy Taumoelau, and Westlee Tonga

-For the second game in a row, Dexter Ransom did not see any action.  Maybe I have just not heard, but I don't think its due to injuries.  Sure, playing time at receiver is precious, but I just don't know what to think.  He falls into the Aiona Key category if you ask me.  These guys are good enough to dominate JUCO ball, but not quite good enough to be a regular at D1.  But since they dominated JUCO, they get a lot of stars by their name.

-Good to see Miles Mason.  He has been a welcome addition to the team.  Frankly, I am beginning to forget about Benji and Po'u.

-Keith McGil did not get the start this week.  I was nervous about our safeties coming into this year, but after this BYU game and the others, I am very pleased with how they have done.  I thought McGil would be more of a factor, but the season is young.

As always, what did you think?

Interesting

We’ve never beaten Washington. Let’s break that trend!

I want to see more Langi! Maybe Whit has him blocking on special teams so he can learn how to do it; he certainly runs well enough to play.

I also want to see at least one lineman start grading out over 90%. We’re supposed to be that good.

I really like the way Chappuis and Topps look out there; I expect we will be seeing more of them in the secondary. Does nickel back take a different skill set than safety or cb? Anyone know?

slightly different

nickelback is essentially a third linebacker. Obviously, they are used when there are 3+ receivers on the field. They typically will cover an inside receiver. Set on the inside (similar to where an outside linebacker would be), they have edge responsibility and outside containment duties.

Last year, Lamar Chapman would slide over from corner to nickel. He was great at rushing the passer from that spot.

So no, its not just a third corner that you toss out there. They have to essentially be a linebacker/corner hybrid.

to follow up with that.

TCU has been a top defense in recent years with a 4-2-5 format. They are able to get enough pressure on the QB with the front four that they can drop an extra man into coverage. This is different from nickel in that you have an extra safety playing. In this scheme, the extra DB plays more like a linebacker/safety hybrid than a linebacker/corner hybrid in the nickel formation.

4-2-5 will get throttled unless you have some un freaking real athletes all over the board, in which case it will dominate.

So from a skill set perspective

It’s pretty similar in terms of knowing assignments, etc, but you have to be able to be a bit more of a bruiser?

That would fit with Topps; I’ve met him a few times and he’s built more like a linebacker than a DB (assuming he’s put on as much weight as the guide says he has).

Not so impressed with Langi so far.

Didn’t really get a chance to see his blocking, but his running was decent at best, and the only time he actually managed a decent run he fumbled.

So far all I’ve gotten from his use in the past two games is that there is a reason he’s 3rd on the chart.
