Leonard Nimoy is the only reason that video is worth watching. Sorry not a Bruno Mars fan. But yes, beer and bathrobe will be drink and attire for a relaxing football Saturday.

I've got the Syracuse Toledo game

College football over the NFL any day. College basketball way over the NBA any day. Go Orange. Go Utes. Go Kings. Go Dodgers.

I spent the morning

watching G-Tech slice up North Carolina. Still watching now, actually… but it looks like it is getting away from the Tarheels.

How did Notre dame do against Pitt?

They won...

In an ugly game. Pitt looks beatable. Very beatable.

ASU USC 8:15 KICKOFF

Asu is coming off their first loss this season to face the Trojans at home. USC is 18-9 in the series against the sun devils. Last years game was a 34-33 thriller which put SC to their 11th consecutive win against asu. The Trojans who are 3-0 look to extend their winning streak tonight, but not if Dennis Erickson can help it, he re focuses his players extremely well, especially after a loss. Any thoughts guys?

by aUTmanAMi on Sep 24, 2011 2:49 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

Cal at Washington

Both teams look pretty good on offense, lots of athletic plays by both teams to get the extra yards, but both teams look pretty sloppy on defense thus far, Washington next week, and Utah at Cal a few weeks after should both be very winnable games.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 3:29 PM MDT reply actions

Really don't see a game the Utes should lose...

Now I’m not saying we’ll be 11-1 entering the Pac-12 title game, but every game is winnable from here on out.

Hopefully we can build a nice cushion over ASU these next few weeks by taking care of business at home (and having them lose to the Trojans and Ducks). If that’s the case, either Cal or Arizona won’t turn into must-win games (hate must-win road games).

by JazzyUte on Sep 24, 2011 3:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Not easy but winnable. There is a difference there. A winnable game just means we don’t view the game as being daunting, like the Utes would have to have everything go their way in order to beat Cal or Washington. The Utes basically needed a lot of things to go their way to beat USC, like not letting Matt Barkley go off for 4-5 TDs. Utah doesn’t need a perfect game to beat those teams. There is no disrespect there, Utah is in no way a perfect team, and they make lots of mistakes but so are Cal and Washington. Hence they’re winnable games, but that doesn’t mean I’m saying they’ll be gift wrapped.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 5:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Exactly...

None of the games left on the schedule are going to be easy.

But they’re winnable.

by JazzyUte on Sep 24, 2011 6:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed.

You guys were extremely lucky to get to skip both Stanford and Oregon in the same season.

by Mind of no mind on Sep 25, 2011 1:38 AM MDT up reply actions

I would add,

outside of those two teams, every team in the Pac 12 seems beatable by every other team. Even Oregon State and Buffalo have a reasonable chance of beating any other Pac 12 team outside of those two on any given week.

by Mind of no mind on Sep 25, 2011 1:42 AM MDT up reply actions

Hehe, I know what you mean,

but OSU probably was thinking the same thing about the 1-9 WSU cougs at home last year too. ;)

If ASU drops this game with USC @ Utah becomes a must win.

Utah looks like it’s learning from last year you can still have a terrific season if you lose a game. After last years loss to TCU they snowballed, and in a way, rightfully so. They had the pressure of having to go undefeated to accomplish success in the MWC. Having gone undefeated twice and had 2 BCS bowl victories, the Utes could never be happy with the Las Vegas bowl. So they snowballed when they lost to TCU cause 1 loss.

This years team looks like they have matured, and it doesn’t hurt that being in the Pac-12 means undefeated is no longer necessary, but I really think they’ve realized that and that is why they will get better as the season goes on, and may lose again but hopefully not snowball like last year realizing placing 1-3 in this new conference is a successful season just about any year.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 5:39 PM MDT reply actions

something the P12 doesn't understand...

AF, BYU, & TCU are not easy outs. Come week 5 we will know what teams have quit and what teams are head cases. As long a Utah keeps focused, which won’t be hard this year (everything is THE FIRST), I agree with Jazzy all our remaining games are wynnable as long as he stays healthy and we find a consistent run game.

agreed

Arizona State is the toughest and they are coming to RES and seemingly lose a defensive player every week to a serious injury.

ASU

That game vs ASU is looking a little daunting.

The Wildcats

are being slowly turned into hamburger by the first half of their schedule. They won’t have anything left to play for by the time we visit them.

I dislike USC

But I want them to win tonight since it will help Utah reach the Pac-12 title game by giving ASU a loss.

by Jeremy Mauss on Sep 24, 2011 10:07 PM MDT reply actions

ASU vs USC

Burfict looks unstoppable, but I haven’t been impressed with ASU’s offense. They’re throwing a lot of screens and for whatever reason USC isn’t having trouble containing. But defensively ASU looks very impressive, I’m worried how the Ute O-line will hold up against their front 7.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 10:20 PM MDT reply actions

ASU is tough for me to figure out. They’re looking good here at home, and they looked very good at home against Missouri, but at Illinois they looked horrible. Their run game looks very basic, and I don’t think they’ll be able to run from the shotgun, and despite USC’s big DB’s I’m surprised they aren’t trying to play more man to man against an ASU offense that is living off of their receivers settling into short open zones.

Seeing ASU hand off from the shotgun, I can see why Utah switched to a pro style offense.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 11:21 PM MDT reply actions

ASU wins...

Gotta still think they’re the favorites to win the Pac-12 South.

by JazzyUte on Sep 24, 2011 11:21 PM MDT reply actions

IF Utah had to go to Tempe to play the Sun Devils, I would pick the Sun Devils. Even though they’ve only had 1 road game, I don’t see this team as being much different than past ASU teams that struggled away from home. Plus it doesn’t hurt that Kiffin has to give ASU more to get up for by going for a stupid 2 point conversion.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 11:26 PM MDT up reply actions

I think Utah beats ASU...

However, with this win, it leaves Utah little margin of error from here on out. Unless the Sun Devils flop in a game they shouldn’t (entirely possible), then Utah probably needs to go no worse than 7-1 the remainder of the way in conference play. Is that possible? Sure. Likely? I don’t know.

I was hoping ASU would lose tonight, which would’ve allowed the Utes a chance to still beat ’em at RES and have room for two losses to still claim a spot in the Pac-12 title game.

by JazzyUte on Sep 24, 2011 11:39 PM MDT up reply actions

This game looked like it was a bowl game for ASU, and it was at home for them. They looked impressive, but the only game they’ve had on the road this year, they’ve looked horrible, and they won’t be on the road again until they come to SLC. So while I think the ASU game will be the most difficult one outside of visiting USC the second game of the year, I think the Utes O-line will hold up being at home against what looks like a good front 7 by ASU, and the defense will have the advantage of the noise RES brings on game day, not to mention playing at an altitude ASU isn’t used to.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 11:49 PM MDT up reply actions

I have to confess..

I actually hold season tickets to ASU football games, a confession that may appear to contradict my screen name. However, I just recently moved to Phoenix and bought the tickets in a pathetic attempt to fill the void left by my inability to attend Utah home games.
Anyway, this is the third game in person I’ve been able to watch them play, and I’ll admit they are very good, but they are also very beatable. Their offensive scheme reminds me a lot of what Utah was doing the past few years, although Osweiler is much more of a run threat than Wynn was (but not by much), so the read option works a little better for them. But they run a lot of plays East-West. Osweiler can be dangerous down field, but they never come out throwing the ball down field. Although last night I can’t think of a single long shot taken down field. They love to pass out in the flats to their receivers, then set up a 10-15 shot across the middle. Bottom line is, they have several talented receivers and running backs. However, their offense is very predictable in my opinion, which is exactly what I felt hurt Utah last year. Teams like TCU, BYU and Boise State had defenses good enough to pick up on the same receiving routes that we ran over and over again.

On the other side of the ball, their defense was supposed to be their strong point this year. Up until last night’s game against USC, ASU’s defense was good, but not great, and was actually the point of frustration for a lot of the ASU fans down here. They play for the big hits instead of form talking, and gave up a lot of big plays. While ASU’s defense deserves all the credit for last night, USC also made it very easy at times for ASU’s defense. Vontaz Burfict is a BEAST, but ASU has lost a lot of their key players. Also, from my understanding, they also have some young DBs who are still learning.

In my opinion, I think ASU will be the toughest team left on our schedule, BUT I think Utah can beat them if we show up to play. I didn’t watch the ASU-Illinois game because it was at the same time as the BYU game, but I understand that they put a lot of pressure on Osweiler, which basically shut down ASU’s offense. If our front seven can get similar pressure on Osweiler, I think Utah has a shot.

Definitely going to be an interesting rest of the season.

This weekend felt empty without a game. Anyone think there’s a chance CGD comes again for the ASU if we both win our next two?

by mykneegrows on Sep 24, 2011 11:50 PM MDT reply actions

Don’t know about CGD, Pac-12 lost a lot of interest in opening week losses. ASU plays OSU at home, that should be easy win for ASU, and Utah has Washington at home next week, which is a good chance at win, especially coming off of BYE week. I just don’t think theres enough between now and the game to garner enough attention for CGD to come. But I interesting enough nationally to be on ESPN.

by WeizenUte on Sep 24, 2011 11:54 PM MDT up reply actions

It's possible for GameDay to come, but I'd bet against it.

More likely candidates that day:
Oklahoma vs. Texas (in Dallas)
Florida at LSU

UW

The ASU game won’t matter if we don’t beat UW. I think we will have to score some points to beat UW.

Captain Obvious says:

If there’s one thing we’ve learned by now, it’s that every game is its own animal. We can’t sum up any team by an individual performance (except Oregon State, maybe). UDub could come to RES and waste Utah, or the U could stifle ‘em silly, or either team could win by just a single point. Same goes for ASU, and Cal, and WSU, and Zona, and Pitt, and etc. None of our upcoming games are guaranteed wins, but none are guaranteed loses either. It’s all so up in the air, but that’s as it should be. All Utah can do is take each game at a time and work to not have any down weeks.
