Arizona State game to air on ROOT, start at 1:30

Though the importance of this game will obviously depend on what happens this Saturday, potentially the biggest Pac-12 South game of the season has been set for a 1:30 start on ROOT television.

The afternoon start for a huge home game might bring back instant nightmares of last year's TCU debacle - another afternoon game later in the season that, unfortunately, turned ugly.

Or maybe I'm the only one who instantly thought of that performance when I heard the start time.

Regardless, I am disappointed in the start time and where the game will air. It's becoming less and less likely, especially with mostly losing programs remaining on the conference schedule, that Utah will have one of its conference games covered by either ESPN or ABC. The Colorado game is also scheduled for ROOT.

Arizona State, I thought, anyway, would be Utah's best shot at getting on legitimate national television with the possibility of it pitting two ranked teams vying for a division championship. I guess I was wrong.

This is the game for all the marbles in the South Division and we can’t get on a decent tv station? Unbelievable. Maybe all the tv execs are still sippin’ on the USC kool-aid…ridiculous. This game is gonna be awesome. However, one game at a time – we still need to beat Washington. Go Utes.

The USC kool aid?

You do realize USC isn’t even playing that weekend, right?

by ev on Sep 27, 2011 11:27 AM MDT up reply actions

Worst Case...

Next year we don’t have to worry about crappy TV coverage.

If anyone found my snowboarding gloves after storming the field following the 2004 TDS game, I want them back!

What is ROOT TV?

Does Comcast have that? I have never heard of it…..

Is this just another name for FSN (as in, the channel that the Jazz games are on?)

Also, how “national” is this game, it sounds like a regional broadcast to me.

Yes. ROOT is FSN...

And yes, it’s regional. BC-Clemson is scheduled for FSN too a half hour before the game.

cool

i guess since I dont have cable anymore that I have fallen behind when it comes to the names of these channels.

I said it on my FanShot, and I'll say it here as well.

Most importantly everyone needs to get their damned asses in the seat by 1:15 at the absolute latest. This is going to be a huge game. We need to be loud and rockus from the beginning. There better not be any empty chairs by kickoff. Everyone needs to be ready and loud before kickoff. We are not like that lousy fairweather fan base down south.

last time that happened TCU happened. Don’t know if fans will do that again, kind of lame

by PhuckthePhillies on Sep 26, 2011 5:54 PM MDT up reply actions

That's no excuse

The fact that they loss to TCU is no excuse not to have the stadium full at kickoff. In fact, there really is no excuse not to have the stadium full at kickoff.

Garbage...

I can’t believe that there isn’t more interest in this game.

Either the network affiliates think Utah will lose, or that the interest in the Pac-12 South is regional at best.

Either way, it’s a slap in the face to not only us, but ASU. They are unlikely to make anything better than regional programming outside of the Oregon game…and probably not even that if we beat them…

Just gotta concede the old Pac-10 TV deal stinks...

Than goodness it’s the last year of it. Unfortunately, I think it also shows that there isn’t much confidence in the Utah football program. I said this all the way back when the national television schedule was released and Utah was left out in the cold and I said it again when we found out the SC game would be on Versus instead of ABC/ESPN/ESPN2.

It was the first Pac-12 game ever and it still couldn’t sniff a respectable time slot. Hopefully this doesn’t carry over into next year.

if we win these games

we will start to get picked up by the big boys. if we lose them, we will continue to have these issues.

Could be worse. Look at BYU. ESPNU just picked up their game against SJSU and its at 8:15 local time. So 10:15 on the east coast. Think anyone but the most hard core zoobs will stay up for that one? Nope.

Not like we have an infinite amount of games left...

haha

And let’s not act this is one-sided, either. ASU is part of the equation here. They’re 1-0 in conference play, should be 2-0 after they beat Oregon State, and this game is still getting the television treatment – even though it’s the Pac-12 South Game of the Year.

If we win Saturday, it won’t change the scheduling of this game. Even before we had a chance to win, the game against SC, which was the first Pac-12 game ever, was pushed to Versus instead of ESPN or ESPN2.

So while I think winning does help boost our chances, it won’t guarantee anything.

Stinks

I figured this would be on ESPN and Versus at worst, but to be on FSN is just awful. This is the game that probably will decide the Pac-12 South.

FSN on the East Coast

Last week, Cal-Washington was a featured game on Fox Sports. I don’t know if it will be the same for Utah-ASU but I hope so. I really want to watch this game.

by UteinBrooklyn on Sep 26, 2011 10:36 PM MDT reply actions

To be honest

(And this is just an objective neutral viewpoint with only a business model in mind), Utah-ASU never stood a snowball’s chance in h-e-double hockey sticks of overtaking the value of Miami-VT or Iowa-Penn State, which both have start times at 3:30ET as well.

While it might be more competitive and worth more in-conference than KState-Mizzou (the ABC regional game at that time), with Florida-LSU and Air Force-Notre Dame happening at the same time on competing networks, ESPN made the right call and chose the game more likely to draw eyeballs. Versus chose CU-Stanford because that features a top-10 team that didn’t conflict time-wise with another game it’s probably contractually required to show at 4ET (most likely UNLV-Nevada). ESPN2 will probably pick up Kansas-OKState because that’s another top-10 team match at the same time. And FX already showed a Utah game (which was, btw, a nationally broadcast game).

Since there aren’t any other appealing Pac-12 matchups (and I highly doubt UA-OSU is going to be picked up), ESPN just stuck with it’s Thursday Pac-12 requirement and passed this particular week on a Saturday game (which they can do I think a maximum of three times this season). But there is still a chance that the game is the featured afternoon game in all FSN regions, unless Kansas-OKState gets bumped down.

by RedOscar on Sep 27, 2011 4:18 AM MDT reply actions

Correction

Versus already chose a Utah game. FX is only required to show one game a day, and it chose one of the Big 12 games with higher ranked opponents than ASU (either A&M or Baylor).

by RedOscar on Sep 27, 2011 4:23 AM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don't expect any Utah games to be nationally televised.

Just the opposite, actually. Even if the U were sitting at 3-0, playing dominating football and ranked in the top 10, I’d still be surprised by a national airing. As Ute fans, we should all be accustomed to lack of national exposure by now. We’re in a smaller market and have been toiling away in obscurity for the past century. This is only our first year in “the big time”. Honestly, if I were living in NY and had no connections to Utah, I wouldn’t give half a shit about the U of U. It’s a problem that’ll take care of itself if Utah keeps winning consistently in a manner that the rest of the nation finds appealing/intriguing. That’s, realistically, the best and only way for Utah to build national interest.

ABC/ESPN never were scheduled to have a game on Oct. 8th

I don’t know if they can change that in the middle of the season, but if you look at a preseason TV schedule the PAC-12 options for Oct. 8th were 2 games on FSN and 1 game on VS. I don’t know the choosing order, but I would guess that we were the first choice and that happened to be FSN. So it’s not a matter of getting mad at ABC/ESPN (though they are often at fault), the fault is with the old PAC-10 TV deal. That deal was awful. So thank God for Larry Scott for bringing in Utah and for getting a great new TV deal.

It’s the same deal with the upcoming game against the UW, it was either FSN or FX. FX choose the Big-12, so all 3 PAC games are on FSN. On the plus side, these are considered ‘National’ games, so they should be on all FSN/Root/CSN affiliates.

Even the USC game, there was no provision for an ABC/ESPN game on that date. So Versus was as good as we could have done.

And as an out of stater, I will gladly take the games picked up by FSN rather than watching the online KJZZ feed. Looking at our schedule and the TV schedule, I would predict that the rest of our games have a decent chance of being picked up by FSN, less so for OSU and WSU. And Pitt may still be on ESPN.

Here are the pre-season TV slots:

Yes ABC/ESPN can change a game

However they have to do it in house. They can switch an ABC match up to ESPN and the other match up to ABC within a two week window. They did so last year. As for picks,

As for picks, ESPN gets first choice and Fox follows. However it’s a limited number for both by contract. Games not picked up pre-season are then dumped into the two week window for the balance of picks (again ESPN goes first). Any game not picked up afterward is relegated to the school contract with whatever carried they signed up (many have Fox contracts).

ESPN passed on the Oct 8th date, just as they passed on the USC vs Utah match-up.

Unless the game is picked up by Fox for their national slot, it’s not considered a national game. It’s normally being shown on the regional Fox network. Now more than one of those regional networks might pick it up, but again it’s not a national game.

TV coverage of the Arizona State game.

There seems to be a lot of mis-information about the TV coverage of the Arizona State vs. Utah game. It is being broadcast on FSN, which is Fox Sports Network. There are thirty to forty FSN stations around the country with local areas. ROOT was owned by Fox last year and for some reason they sold their regional coverage stations in Oregon, Washington, Colorado and Utah to Directv which changed the names to ROOT. However, ROOT carries the FSN games. I watched the California vs. Washington game last Saturday on ROOT, and because I subscribe to Directv’s premiun Sports package, I could see the game on any of the FSN channels that Directv carries, for areas all all over the US. There were more than 12 channels carrying the same game, and I stopped counting. Fox is trying to gear up to compete with ESPN/ABC, Next year they will have games on FSN, FX (a national channel) and even on the Fox Broadcast Network (Salt Lake channel 13). So stop whining about no coverage, it is 100 times better than the MTN. They are all in HD and have very good announcers. And next it will get even better.

Surprised, but not really.

I never expected this game to get national attention. USC, on the other hand, was a shoo-in for ABC I thought. But ABC didn’t air any prime time game that Saturday, which explains it.

But ASU… no way. Never thought it would and I think it’s because there’s not a whole lot of interest in it. ASU and Utah both have very limited fan bases, and the TV networks see that.

The ONLY other game we have that could possibly get a national network is Pittsburgh. And that’s not because Pitt’s any good… but rather that’s the only game I see where TV rights aren’t cut and dried.

Utah-Pitt may get ESPN2 or something because both teams are nationally recognized, and non-conference games typically draw more interest than conference games.

That said, I do believe, however, that the Pitt game will end up on FSN or possibly Versus. ESPN2 with an outside chance.
