Oh Hell No - First OC Rumor is a total freaking Joke

Oh Helll No!. One thing that has worried me since this damn process started was that Kyle was going to do something un-freaking believably stupid like look at Gary Crowton. Turns out I was right to worry.

Jesus H Freaking Christ. Seriously Kyle. I realize you have BYU roots, but that doesn't mean anybody with any ties to BYU needs to be looked at. Especially someone who has been such a total disaster at every single stop he's made. Please for the love of all that is holy don't look at any former Cougars, and especially don't look at this lousy bum who gets ran out of every coaching position he has ever held.

It's not like Maryland was stellar on Offense this year. Look at LSU, sure they won the NC in spite of Crowton his first year, but then the offense steadily declined. First year Crowton is gone they were back in the NC. Crowton leaves Oregon and all of a sudden it's an unstoppable Offensive force.

This is the worst freaking possibility, and has ruined my weekend.

I'm not sure what to think.

Part of me thinks he would do really well at Utah, but I’m just not sold on him. I guess we gotta wait and see if he even lands the job.

I think its all just speculation. The article in questions seems to have been written purely for reaction than for actual news.

He hasn’t done anything more than interview for the job. Which puts him among many others. I don’t see him being hired so lets not get all worked up about something that may not happen.

by Utehawk on Jan 12, 2012 11:06 PM MST reply actions

The far that he was even interviewed is the problem.

It just lends even more credence to the rumors that Whit doesn’t network very will, and therefore doesn’t have a good poll of prospects to draw from when he needs to make a hire.

How anyone can think that entertaining the idea if Crowton is a good move, and won’t royally piss off the fan base ifs beyond me.

That and honesty, just once, I want to set him make a hire without any BYU ties.

One candidate you don't like and suddenly Whitt doesn't network well?

Norm Chow was hired entirely because of Whitt’s networking. And there are 70 applicants for this position. If there’s a bad reaction to the eventual hire, it will be a matter of judgment on Kyle’s part, not a lack of decent candidates.

It's not me saying it.

It’s been something mentioned heavily by Sports Radio the last few years see he’s had to fill vacancies. I’m just saying that him going back to the Byu well again tends to lend credence to the rumors.

But honestly other than chow, Whit doesn’t have a good track record on the offensive side of the ball. Ludwig was terrible. Schramm/Roderick was a failed experiment. Chow fell into his lap. Another miss would be three our of four, and Crowton is a guaranteed miss.

Yes Davis is a good hire

But that doesn’t go against the networking rumor. Whit and Davis already had a relationship from being on McBride’s staff in the 90’s.

Also

How do you know if there are even “decent candidates”? The only one we’ve even heard about is far from decent.

So far

Whit has done a great job filling vacancies. You know he’s hiring good guys when they take a step up somewhere else. We’ve got coaches stepping up to be OCs elsewhere, and coordinators becoming head coaches. He must be doing something right to be impressing all of these people.

by Joseph Silverzweig on Jan 13, 2012 11:05 AM MST up reply actions

Offensively that's not the case.

Schramm downgraded in terms of schools. In fact you could argue that his bungling of the Oc position three years so (promoting, not one, but two people who weren’t ready to be OC, and then having to demote them) had cost it’s a really good running back coach.

Whit doesn’t get any credit for grooming Chow.

Ludwig was basically run off.

Defensively he’s done fine. Offensively, not so much. He must get this hire right. We can’t afford another false start with the OC position.

Serenity now...

Breathe. K-Dub is a nice guy and the interview was merely a courtesy. Notice how Lya (who is the worst) had no comment or reaction from the Ute organization. I don’t disagree that those guys who played at the TDS look out for each other, but not to the point where they could put their own job in jeopardy. Nothing to worry about here.

Then this must be the coaches lounge

Ram take a few steps back from the ledge and breathe

This is the first thing to come out and as you said in your own title its just a rumor. There are 70 or more applicants and if Whit is really fine waiting til next month to make a decision then I’m sure there will be many more rumors to come.

I'll be fine, as Soon as I actually hear another name in the pot

So far the only confirmed names we’ve heard are Roderick and Crowton.

by UnHoly Ram on Jan 13, 2012 1:23 PM MST up reply actions

Eh, so he started at the bottom of the pile and is working up.

I’m just glad we are interviewing somebody. I was wondering if we were making any progress.

I am not thinking Gary Crouton is a viable choice. More like a bad example to measure everyone else against.

Even Robert Anae would be a step up from GC. Not a big step, but a step.

I find it amusing how excited you all were about Norm Chow

… and how disillusioned you are by Crowton. Crowton, in my mind has a comparable if not favorable total body of work when the two are evaluated objectively. I don’t know the politics or personalities which, of course, are relevant – I’ll leave that to you all to discuss. Still, on football resume alone, this is a comparable candidate to replace the man who just left.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Explain yourself

Coach Crowton, please don’t comment on a post about yourself. You’re not comparable. Your total body of work isn’t too stelar.

You forget Mojo

we saw Crowton first hand for four years…..not only did he struggle on the field but he had several off-the field scandals that tarnished the squeaky- clean image of the TDS. I notice he has had a pattern of succeeding right away (first year ) but then losing steam when he has to play with his own recruits.

As far as Chow is concerned, he did just fine in our book. Chow’s resume is light years ahead of Crowton’s

My take:

I think Gary Crowton is the Norv Turner of college football: good offensive mind with the right tools but a horrible HC. One cannot ignore the fact that both Oregon and LSU got better when he left. (BYU had nowhere to go BUT up after his disastrous era).

LSU

Seemed to have some pretty good offenses when he was there. If his limitation is talent, that’s hopefully something other recruiters can make up for.

My concern is the part where, somewhere, I read that he just wants to stick to the HC’s vision of the offense. That’s a cop-out, and not what Whit needs. hopefully he’ll have the humility to realize that he’s not an offensive mind, and that he needs to hire someone with creativity and self-assurance to take over the reins on that end.

Just a respect interview

Not to worry according to a fairly reliable source Whit had the interview due to his ties with Crow and BYU it was just a formality and done to be curteous
