Runnin' Utes take Stanford down to the wire, lose by three on the road
The Runnin' Utes are getting better.
No, that isn't a subtle jab at Utah's last coach, rather an honest assessment of this year's team.
They look far more competitive than they did in the preseason and in their conference opener. Even in defeat, I was impressed with the effort. Though they were double-digit dogs, Utah still had a chance to tie it at the end and force overtime. Not bad, especially against a talented team like Stanford.
What does it mean? Well, the gap is closing. Unfortunately, they're 1-3 in Pac-12 play and, like against Washington, failed to capitalize on a game they maybe should have won (the Cardinal shot 5-17 from the line). Still, it's encouraging to see this team actually contend in a basketball game - which was a far cry from where they were back in November & December.
I always said I wanted to see progress by January and we have. Now, hopefully, the progress continues and, who knows, maybe they'll surprise a team on the road this season.
Could it be Cal? Unlikely - but I like their chances a bit more today than I did a couple weeks ago.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
Despite how poorly the season started out. I really do have faith that the Runnin’ Utes will get better if not now then next year. Its just going to take time. Everyone knew going into this season that it was going to be a rough year, but hopefully this is a turning point and they continue to win.
We're already "better" now, all things considered
And whomever had the idea to shorten up the rotation, while not necessarily a candidate for the Basketball Hall of Fame, deserves some major props.

Well, yeah, not what I meant I guess.
There has definitely been improvement though.
Tough loss, great game...
I was in attendance with some other Ute colleagues. Fun atmosphere (did feel like a large HS stadium though), Stanford fans were great hosts, and good to finally see some Ute hustle and passion on the court again. Ill do a much better job going forward keeping up to date on the team. I have kinda checked out over the last few years…
Other team's free throw shooting
Both Stanford and Washington struggled mightily shooting free throws. It could be a fluke, but both struggling seems a bit odd. Could it be because Utah is throwing them out of their rythym by playing these low scoring games? There has to be a reaason these teams aren’t making free throws, and the common denominator is Utah. Something Utah’s doing is working.
Looks like Coach Krysto was a good hire, eh?
He ain’t Majerus reborn in a much better body and its waaaay too early to declare him Dean Smith or the other Coach K like in his coaching.
But like Jazzy said we are improving and I hold hope that this season will be bad, but not complete suck.
And around the 1st week of Dec, I was not sure that was true.
This is going to be interesting in years to come, when he has some of his own good recruits here.
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women. Especially BYU. - Conan the Barbarian (ok, maybe he didn't say the BYU part)
Agreed
After getting embarrassed by 40 point to our new rival, we are as of now more competitive. Recent results suggest improvement. Hopefully these continued improvements will be permanent will little inconsistency – a hallmark of the Boylen era.
With Majerus, I just remembered how proud our program used to be! When playing fundamental basketball and tough defense were givens for our program. I have the 1998 Championship Team photo hanging in my study.
Losing by not hitting free throws is weak though.
