Hooker is a three-star OLB out of California and held offers from most Pac-12 schools. His commitment is a bit surprising, but definitely good news.

Looks like a good get.

Looks like he’s got all the skills, just needs some bulk. Redshirt him next year and he’ll fill out.

Watched his video...

Looks to have a superior football IQ and is no nonsense. I don’t think he celebrated after one play; he just got back up and went to the huddle. Great closing speed and can catch the football. I think this signing could be huge…

Looks great

Love the lateral speed; that’s something we’ve been missing. He seems to be patient enough to not get beat to easily, and he’s got the skills to create some INTs. Very exciting signing.

Big time get!

From his offer list, this could guy could have punched his own ticket.

Surprise

pickup. I believe we started our recruitment of him recently and to sway him in a short period of time may indicate our growing appeal. Bias aside, if I were a defensive player out west Utah would be one of two or three programs (USC, Oregon maybe) I would want to play for.

even better news

espn has him as a 4 star recruit. good to know he likes it here

by PMARTI9 on Jan 19, 2012 1:53 AM MST reply actions

Best recruit yet

According to ESPN and Scout, this is every bit as big a get as Hansen or Wilson. In other words, this is a big score!

In fact, just yesterday I was sizing up potential Utah prospects and came across Hooker. I thought, “no way he picks Utah, but I would love to get him.”

One just has to look at his list of offers to agree with that.

I don't read the script. The script reads me.

by TomahawkRed on Jan 19, 2012 3:22 AM MST reply actions

Hansen...?

I get it… Chase Hansen is going to bring something to the table… and is a big deal in Utah… but Recruits like Hooker, Poutasi, Thomas, and pac-12 caliber athletes carry more weight.

I’ve watched Chase and loved him as a HS QB… but make no mistake there is a better chance of Chase being a poor man’s Blechan than a Utah Ute QB.

But as for the class as a whole… it is unlike anything the Utes have ever brought in… I don’t think we have more than 1 or 2 slots left for recruits after hooker being our 23rd commit, but with that being said work is still left to be done…

there are around 5 guys out there throwing the Utes out there as a top 3 choice and if we can land any one or two of these kids we will lock up a top 25 spot and the strongest class on paper in the history of the school.

It is an exciting time to be a Ute.

read somewhere that Poutasi

is taking a trip up to the University of Nike (Oregon).

As a Utah alum going to grad school in Eugene

I’m always afraid when I hear a Utah commit is visiting Oregon. The facilities here are ridiculous. I just hope Utah can convince recruits that the influx of Pac-12 money will improve the facilities in Salt Lake. I love Utah, but if I were an 18 year old who had a chance to play for “Nike,” it would be hard to say no.

by QuackAttackUte on Jan 19, 2012 5:59 PM MST up reply actions

i am nervous about Poutasi too

since he has a visit to Oregon. He could be Ore’gone’ after checking out their facilities.

Derek Brown was a Utah verbal commit too and so was Josh Huff. Now they are at UW and Oregon respectively. Verbal commits are what they are.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Jan 19, 2012 6:22 PM MST up reply actions

just had a little heart to heart

throwin out the facts about Chip Kelly pullin a Pete Carroll and a potential messy fallout…

the kid seems solid and wanting everything the Utes have.

Coach Whit takes kids with half his talent and turned out some all MWC OL… I think the kid knows what he can become in Crimson Red.

I understand the glamor and glitz that comes with all that Nike $$$… but substance and stability over flash is an o-lineman like Jeremiah’s prerogative.

fingers crossed and faith in the Crimson Red…

I am telling you now from the vibes I am feeling now this feels like the best Utah Utes football team I have seen… and doubters and skeptics can keep talking about the lack of QB… but a healthy Jordan Wynn or Travis Wilson can make it happen with the play makers around.

Keith McGill is going to be cornerback and I am picturing him as a Sean Smith but a little more instinctive… Eric Rowe with a little more mass… V.J. crunchin bones over the middle. This D will be top tier…

Just wait.

I am an

optimist but facts are facts. If he is taking a trip up to Oregon as rumored, then he is playing the field and Oregon is the sexier date.

Yes but he is doing it with full knowledge and blessing of Utah Coaches.

If they were worried too much I don’t think they’d have given their blessings.

Yes this is a big fish to hook.

From ESPN:

“Utah landed a promising linebacker prospect in Reshawn Hooker (Fontana, Calif./Miller), who is now the program’s top-rated verbal for 2012.

The four-star is a tough player who displays the playing speed and range to be effective all over the field. "

On Rivals at least.

Scout (ugh) has us in the 40s, but Rivals has us at 27 with 23 commits and 1082 pts (or an average of 47 per recruit). If we get two more middle-of-the-road commits, we’d add 95 pts and would end with 1177, which would put us at 23rd on the current list. If we add 5 more commits and two more 4-stars (which is entirely possible, based on the rumors), let’s assume that number is 300 more points, putting us at 1382 and 19th.

Now that all assumes nobody ahead of us gets any more commits. I don’t know anything about the recruiting classes of LSU, VA Tech, TCU, Vandy, TTech, and Virginia, but I believe that UCLA doesn’t have any more room and will probably lose a commit or two between now and signing day, and they’re currently at 21.

Another piece of good news about this

SLTrib has him being recruited by Brian Johnson… he looks like a guy who will be with Utah for a long time, it would be wonderful to see him turn into a top-shelf recruiter.

Brian Johnson really loves it here...

I think he’s a vital piece to our growing puzzle: a non-Mormon, non-Utah non-white coach who sells the program & the state so very well.

by JazzyUte on Jan 21, 2012 2:00 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah

It’s a great place for anyone to live, but I can see that being a hard sell if the recruiter comes from the overwhelming majority and the recruit would be concerned about being ostracized. Johnson can bridge that gap.
