Utes climbing in recruiting rankings
As of this morning, Rivals has us with the #27 recruiting class in the country. It's a tight race at this point, and it would probably take another 4 star to vault us into the top 25 at this point... but a heck of a year for Coach W!

Greg Allen to Kansas was probably of Utah's doing.
I’m willing to bet Utah pulled his schollie after his visit to Kansas.
Made up for it a little today.
A 6-6 220 tight end (2 star) out of California.
He looks a little slow, but he’s got good hands… I didn’t see a single player in his highlight reel who could challenge him physically, though. Tough to tell what he’ll do when he’s up against someone who can match his size.

All eyes on
Hiva Lutui, 6’1 270 4 star out center of Texas. He’s apparently down to Utah or USC. ESPN has him at 6’2 280 and 3 stars… probably because he’s a little small.
He blocks with remarkable ferocity and is very quick on his feet. Some great pull blocks and pancakes against big opponents in this video. I could see him slotting it at FB immediately, and transitioning to line play as/if he puts on legitimate O-line size.

This might be where the schollie sanctions help Utah.
If USC goes hard after Lutui I can’t see him turning them down.
However, USC is entering it’s first year of schollie sanctions. The sanctions say that USC is only allowed to hand out a max of 15 scholarships. Currently they have 12 commits, so they only have room for 3 more.
To make the math even more fun, they are only allowed to have 75 scholarship players as opposed to the normal 85. After subtracting departing players, and accounting for other new players, the Trojans are currently at 65 scholarship players, meaning they only have 10 slots for those 15 new scholarships they can give out.
So either way there will be players cut lose. But the Trojans have to decide just how much they really want Lutui.
It's an interesting situation
There will be a small secondary level of Pac-12 recruiting when USC cuts those 5 extra loose. Hopefully we’ll pick up a few of them.
I know USC needs depth in their line… here’s to hoping Lutui picks us whether USC wants him or not. =]

My question is.
If USC does pull the Schollies from 5, will they be eligible for immediate play much like the Russell Wilson situation last year?
No.
Russell Wilson was an NC State graduate, so he could apply for graduate programs (sort of like the Ryan Smith situation)

In that case
A recruit on the edge would be running a risk of not being able to play for a year? That’s a lot of risk to take… but USC has magical athlete-magnet powers.

Bingo
Dolphins and sharks are natural enemies. Dolphins are like, "Quit eating us," and sharks are like, "Stop smiling all the time, you morons."
