USC gets first Pac-12 win with blowout defeat of slumping Utes

Disappointed_medium

I feared this after the UCLA debacle. When you're terrible overall, you're even worse on the road. The USC Trojans are not a good team. They entered tonight's game as the worst team in the conference record wise, had depth issues galore and still rolled the hapless Utes.

I hate to say it, but all the progress this team made in January has eroded and they're now looking just as bad as they did in November and December.

If there is one good thing to glean from this horrendous road swing is that it's now over. The Utes return to Salt Lake City, where they've been at least more competitive this past month, to take on the Oregon schools.

Not sure if they'll win, but hopefully we can at least, you know, make it a game.

Good thing this is basketball

If your football team is this bad, you need to recruit 20 decent players to get to improve to the next level. In basketball, 2-3 players (even 1 if he’s the second coming of Michael Jordan) can convert Utah from a ugly team to a NCAA cinderella. Of course, it’s hard to recruit those 2-3 players if the team sucks this bad.

Teams like UConn and Syracuse only have minor slumps in talent and success, mainly because they have a talent pool coming up year after year. Same coaches. Same team philosophy. Utah needs to stabilize and sell the Pac-12 (which hasn’t been a big selling point for years, unfortunately).

We’ll see what happens, I’m kind of confident, but have my doubts if we ever can move up to the next level in BB.

Go Cuse. Go Utes. Go Kings (hockey version). Go Panthers (hockey version). Go Marlins. Go Dodgers. I despise the NFL and NBA, so don't bore me.

I remember not that long ago

When I would do those NCAA brackets, and would always do one where Syracuse and Utah would end up in the Final Four (a couple of years, my bracket would have them meeting earlier, so I would always default to the higher seeded one). In case you think this was a dumb idea, I did pretty well in 96 and 98.

Utah can come back, but you’re right, we can’t be shitty like this for too long.

They stink, we knew that

haha, no, they don't stink...

That’s way generous. We’re the worst team in the Pac-12 – we proved that last night by losing, badly, to a team that hadn’t even won a conference game this season. We’re one of the worst teams in the country. That’s more than just stinking. We’ve gone beyond plain stink and reached a place only reserved for the most vile of smells.

What progress we have seen this year vanished last night. Storey gets benched, plays only 19 minutes and is tossed under the bus on the post-game. Larry’s playing the bench like it’s Adams State all over again. What could’ve been a nice pick-me-up victory for the players was instead relegated to a glorified scrimmage.

On the bright side, Larry must feel pretty good about getting more new bodies, because playing walk-ons like he did last night only sent the message that the entire roster is on thin ice.

off topic:

How bout our former Utes in the Pro Bowl?. Yeah I know it’s an all-star show with no defense but hey, two of our boys showed up big. How many Cougars were there in the Pro Bowl this year? :)

Steve Smith

Led the AFC in reception yards (118) and a TD. Even though Fitzgerald caught 3 and Brandon Marshall had 4 , Smith still had a good day.

There were 43 cougars, all working concessions.

Stuck in the Mud

(To be quoted with a thick Southern drawl.) “When you are stuck in the mud of life, you can’t walk out of it. You need to EXPLODE out of it.” – John Addison

Now Coach just needs to figure out how that translates into basketball.
