National Signing Day open thread
Today is signing day! The future of every football program across this great diverse nation of ours will be held hostage by a bunch of high school kids and, knock on wood, decent fax machines.
These are the moments that make or break a coaching staff. You don't bring in the recruits, you're not going to win and if you don't win...well I don't need to finish that one for you.
So, as it is every year, the top recruits will fax in their letters of intent and all will be right with the world. Because these kids haven't played a down of football at the college level! That means the sky is the limit or something.
For Utah, it's a chance to cash in all those chips from their Pac-12 invite and Sun Bowl victory.
We'll have updates throughout the day, but if you're really looking for second-to-second news, head on over to Twitter and follow the following accounts: @utahathletics, @utezone, @insidetheutes, and, of course, @blocku.
The first faxes are expected early in the morning, so if you're up around 8:00 MST, get ready for the first wave.
After the jump, review potential Utah commits that are, at the moment, currently undecided.
Alphonso Marsh: Three star cornerback out of Compton, California, Marsh holds offers from Arizona, Tennessee, UCLA, Utah and Washington. Marsh will make his announcement live on CBSLA at 6:15 Salt Lake time.
Probability he signs with Utah: The word is good on Marsh. Expect him to be a Ute by day's end.
Brandon Beaver: Four star cornerback out of Compton, California, Beaver apparently has whittled his list down to California, Utah and Washington. Beaver will make his announcement live on foxsportswest.com at 4:00 Salt Lake time.
Probability he signs with Utah: Uncertain. I want to believe Utah stands a good chance of landing him, and they're definitely in the mix, however, he has favored Washington and Cal lately on Twitter.
Brandon Fanaika: Four star offensive guard from Pleasant Grove, Utah. Fanaika originally committed to Stanford, however, it appears he's opened up his recruitment and is now deciding between BYU, Cal, Stanford and Utah.
Probability he signs with Utah: Lots of crazy internet buzz surrounding Fanaika right now. No one really knows what's real or not - so, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Carlos Lozano: Three star offensive tackle from Monterey Park, California. He holds offers from Kansas, Kansas State, UCLA, Utah, Utah State and Washington State.
Probability he signs with Utah: It appears Lazano has narrowed his list down to Utah & Washington State, but he's not announcing a leader just yet.
Moana Ofahengaue: Three star outside linebacker from Lehi, Utah, Ofaghengau will be making his decision during the International Bowl, which starts on CBSSports Network at 4:00 Salt Lake time.
Probability he signs with Utah: He's looking good - but tune in to see for sure.
Raymond Ford: Three star cornerback out of Gardena, California, Ford is down to Cal, Utah and Washington State.
Probability he signs with Utah: This is one where I think only the player knows which way he's leaning.
The Utes stand a decent shot of getting most these players, so, hopefully, today is a good day.

Tomorrow is signing day.
It’s not February 1st anywhere yet.
Everyone hates a pink-shirt-wearing communist.
Yeah? Well I'm going to bed in about thirty minutes because I'm sicker than a dog and it was either get this up now or fail to get it up at all...
Which would you have liked?
Thanks for getting it up!
Next year there should be Pac-12 Bowl game open threads. =]

Actually....
It was 7:17 am February 1 here where I live when he posted it. Just sayin’.
this is the only day I care about recruiting....then i dont care again until spring ball starts in march.
but this is probably our best class ever, and it seems to be only getting better.

I get to celebrate Ute's signing day by getting a root canal
and will probably miss most of the news. This year’s class better be worth it!
Excited for signing day, but part of me starting to dislike this. Why?
College football fans all over the country are hoping these high school football players sign with their teams. The list above of undecided/uncommitted football players tells me they want the whole world to wait on them to make a freakin decision. If you ask me, these players act like dang PRIMA DONAS! I’m gonna make my commitment on national TV?!?!?! What the freak?!?!?! Just make a freakin decision!
I hope most of them will sign with Utah, but if they don’t, I won’t really care. Just sign with anyone and get it over with. IMO, the class (I believe) will still be considered the best signing class ever.
Rumor has it Brandon Fanaika has now added BYU and possibly even Cal according to DNews and SLTrib. I see that Brandon Fanaika can’t make up his mind! What is he going to do now, have the local TV stations in Utah televise his commitment?!?!?! Part me hopes he signs with Utah, and party starting to not care where he goes. If he is torn between Utah b/c he loves Utah and Stanford b/c of higher education that is hard. But now you add BYU and Cal, what gives? I know its a huge decision for him to make, I just hope he knows what he really wants.
Other than that, will see who is going to be a true Ute tomorrow.
Star Belly Sneeches
We all know how ‘stars upon thars’ turned out. Eric Weddle and Alex Smith were ‘just’ 2 star recruits.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that we get some ‘good’ football players in this year’s class.

I think Jazzy's under the weather...
The start of the post looks remarkably like last year’s thread. Give him pops though, the prospects (the stuff we care about) are accurate.
Status
on Poutasi? Would like to see the cousins (Poutasi and Fanaika) join Lutui on that O-line. Marsh would be a good one too, 6’2 cornerbacks are not commodities.
Poutasi gave a soft-commit to Utah today.
Good news there. 6-6, 330 lbs. Lots of potential – Probably needs to work out like crazy and get some more muscle under that fat.
We already have a 4* recruit signed

OC?
Not hearing a peep on our new OC. Rumor was a possible announcement on signing day. Any baseless hearsay?
That was the last update
I don’t like it. If I was an offensive recruit, I would have liked to have met the coordinator before I made a commitment to Utah. Of course, I’d commit to Utah anyway, because it’s Utah, but they’re not all like me!
Is coach Whitt going to call some WR as his hand is over the BYU hat and be like…
Before you pick up that hat…! Our new offensive coordinator is…………..
The Intimidator
Rather wait than be disappointed
Have a number of solid offensive recruits lined up without an OC. If its between “Arod get his old job” tomorrow or waiting it out, I’d rather wait. Utah is a good program and should be able to find and select a good candidate. While we’re not yet basking in the Pac12 riches, we should have Chow’s salary available to sign a descent OC.
You make a good point
In that we shouldn’t just get a guy to have a guy… especially not Arod
…but at the same time, you’ve gotta concede that Chow was the difference for some of our recruits last year. Heck, that’s how we got Travis Wilson to commit a couple of months ago.
We had since before our bowl game to find a replacement… the only interviewing process that’s taken longer than our offensive coordinator was the one we staged for University President! (Who turned out to be in-house!)
So yeah, I am thrilled that we’re doing our due diligence, but I wish we had a good offensive mind in place for at least part of the recruiting process.
The Intimidator
I bet it's Roderick
He is named as the coach who recruited several players, including York — I wager he has known for a while that he would be named OC.
Better not be
Nothin says “we’re a big time BCS level program” like hiring a no experience in-house candidate who was previously demoted from the OC job.
Yeah, great move Whitt.
I don't read the script. The script reads me.

JC commitment
Tenny Palepoi from Snow JC. Welcome Tenny! Go Utes!
Hiva Lutui
is a Ute.
I was hoping he’d pick us!
This class is getting better and better.
I don't read the script. The script reads me.
Utah is now up to #27 on Rivals
- in the nation with an average star rating of 3.08.
We have actually moved ahead of Cal… who has gotten some really big time recruits.
That’s impressive.
I don't read the script. The script reads me.
Cal has lost all their big time recruits
Losing Lupoi has killed their class.
I See a lot of kids with Cal, Washington, Team X as their choices
And I am just going to go ahead and assume that all of them are goIng to end up in Seattle due to the Tosh Lupoi hire…
Making this assumption now will render any disappointments tomorrow less painful.

Also
Junior Salt, and Vaha Vainuku have sent theirs in.
Tenny Palepoi
Chose Utah last night over BYU and USU (Of course BYU will deny ever recruiting him).
He’s signed now as well.
Fanaika sticks with Stanford
Lot of turmoil with him. He wanted to be at Utah, Mom wanted him at Stanford, then pushed BYU if he was going to stay local.
However he’s a sign and send mission kid, who will go on his mission before enrolling, so something tells me this will all be revisted in 2-3 years.
I'd probably go to Stanford, too
That’s a hell of a degree.

McClellon has been a HUGE Utah Recruiter
He’s been trying to get fellow teammates Brandon Beaver, Alphonso Marsh, and Ray Ford to join him here in Utah.
He’s been extremely vocal, and excited about Utah on Twitter. The fact that Utah is even in the final three for any of the above three is due largely in part to McLellon.

By my count there are four Utah commits who are yet to sign
Zach Lindsay – 3 star OL
Reginald Porter – 2/3 star athlete/safety
Marc Pouvave – 2/3 star OL JC transfer
Pasoni Tasini – 2 star / NR DE
Marc Pouvave is expected to sign at 11. All the committed 4-stars are in. No official word on any of the fence-sitters Jazzy listed above. Marsh, Ford and Beaver are all expected to make their announcements later this afternoon.

Just a feeling...no inside info whatsoever...
Just basing it on the fact no names have leaked and we were told he’d name one this week. With that said, if he doesn’t announce Roderick today, it could suggest he’s going outside the current staff for his hire.

Disagree with your disagreement
Without a line Brady is on his back.
Yea, And they lost their last and their next superbowl...
… Because the Giants Defensive Line got after Brady non stop.
the O-line
are interchangeable. Brady is not.
by Utah-UCLA alum on Feb 1, 2012 12:56 PM MST up reply actions
Funny because since the core of their OL left
The frequency of trips to the Superbowl has decreased.
Just like everything you need more than an OL, but even the Best QB isn’t going to a superbowl without a good offensive line.
The reason it's called a team
Without the D-line getting pressure up front any quarterback is going to tear apart the best Defensive Backfield. Without a good line, a quarterback won’t be to hit his receivers no matter how great they are.
I think because linemen don’t get the “sexy” stats, they don’t get the recognition they deserve.
you can definitely tell which postion I played.
A good OL
can make a pedestrian QB look great, and a bad OL can make a great QB look pedestrian.
Gonna throw up a poll tonight
About who you are most excited about. I’m torn between Wilson and Reshawn Hooker. Assuming he can put on weight, he’s got NFL size and is astonishing to watch play. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s our highest drafted player out of this class.

Not sure about Returning Missionaries...

Nua Poteki
Austin Lee
Pasoni Tasini
Jake Jackson
Vaha Vainuku
are all going on a mission from this class, with Chase Hansen to join them next year.
Good...possibly Great day so far
As this day ticks on, this is looking like a very good class with no letdowns so far. Jazzy: Thanks for posting the cool pic of Travis Wilson signing. Where do you find these things?
Hmmmmm
Maybe you’re a Robert Langdon type….but I don’t see it. What I did see, however, was his response to Utah signee Delshawn Mcclellon question, “I see udub commits left and right got damn. when do we play them ?” Beaver’s response: “we play em 11/10 in seattle”

My money would be Ford
Alphonso Marsh is supposedly a silent commit, and has been pushing hard for Ford (And Beaver) Rumor has it that Ford dropped prohibitive Favorite Cal from his list earlier.
Checking on our mid-major rival...
This from a BYU fan:
If you factor in RM’s, our incoming class is pushing top 25
The problem with that line of thinking is
If you are going to count incoming RM’s you have to discount outgoing RM’s

Taking a look at last years commit list
I know it’s hard/unfair to judge a class after one year (except the JC kids who are brought in to make a difference right away)
The names that jump out to me are:
John White: Three Star- No explanation needed ;)
Kieth McGill: Four Star- I hope last year was just fluke and he becomes a real force, cause he was really hyped coming in.
Eric Rowe: Three Star- Even though McGill had all the hype, it was Rowe that made an immediate impact, yes I know McGill got hurt but having another freshman all-american speaks for itself.
Harvey Langi: four star- Like McGill, we had high hopes for him, but since he failed to separate himself in fall camp (plus the emergence of JWIV) he had a minor impact. That said though, we have to remember he WAS a freshman.

Oh well no surprise commits, but the other side of that, is no surprise de-commits.
Well...
No de-commits, but if Marsh goes to Cal with Ford, you could, I guess, clump him in with that category, since he’s been rumored to be a silent commit.
Well I'm not buying into all the Hand-Wringing and Conspiracies with those three
I still think Marsh stays with us.

Especially since the rumors suggest Beaver is leaning toward Washington and not Cal.

So, definitely moving in the right direction! Win at a higher level and the recruits will come.

Possible...he was the run game coordinator for Minnesota.
But that’s about as much experience he has coaching that position.
SDSU might be a good hire
They’ve been great at running the ball lately.

Coleman Peterson Awarded a Scholarship
It better be contingent on not missing any dead center 20 yarders this year.
I think, on balance
He exceeded expectations remarkably. Colorado was a disaster, but the season turned out okay.

A week before, he was the hero - kicking the game winner in a blizzard...
But he looked iffy in the Sun Bowl. Hopefully he can work past that.

I think the general feeling
Is that he will play for the starting QB job, and then leave on his mission if he doesn’t get that.

Yeah, interesting comments
He said he’s been really busy recruiting, and that’s made it difficult to interview the candidates.
He also said they weren’t trying to hide the OC hire to try not to scare off recruits. He said other schools can point to the no-OC thing as a negative just as well as they could point to a certain OC hire as negative.

http://utahutes.cstv.com/allaccess/?media=296014
should be funny and fun watching Porter.
Cannot wait to watch this kid tear it up… special teams… and eventually settling next to Mr. Rowe as the best ballhawking safety Utah has ever seen.
Dark Horse Special This is the type of the under the radar kid Utah football has made its name on… but now he has that Southern speed and spice to jazz it all up.
Be excited.
Speaking of players from LA...
How is Charles Henderson’s recovery coming along?

to be best of my knowledge fine...
he has good speed… but Dunn may be the special teams guy if he can learn to catch a punt. Reggie really started to get it goin late last year. But Henderson brings a great 4th option to a spread formation and has speed that will never be taught.

RoJo
is the best ball hawking Utah safety in my opinion. But I wouldn’t be disappointed if Rowe somehow knocks him off that mountain.
by Utah-UCLA alum on Feb 1, 2012 4:49 PM MST up reply actions
Eric Weddle????
Please at least say he is a close 2nd…….
Rowe will be a better player
… not ball hawk. Rowe is a solid tackler… who with 10 more pounds of NCAA muscle will be a phenomenal tackler. His ball skills are decent but not on the same level as Robert
Johnson played like a center fielder out there.
he was outstanding. I was hoping to see him stick and play regularly with an NFL club.

Not a bad way to end the day...
Marsh wavered a bit when it came out Ford was going to Cal, but I’m glad he stuck it out and he’ll definitely have a better shot getting to the NFL here than playing at Washington.
Doesn't look like he's signed his LOI, but he's definitely committed.
The delay most likely is due to him playing in that bowl game tonight.
he's committed

How good we can be
all rests on the shoulders of Jordan Wynn literally. With a good quarterback our offense could be so potent! Great WR’s and TE’s, Greats RBs, should be a decent OLine. And our D is always stout. maybe a ? at LB. Ready for september already but i’ll settle for the spring game
