National Signing Day open thread

Today is signing day! The future of every football program across this great diverse nation of ours will be held hostage by a bunch of high school kids and, knock on wood, decent fax machines.

These are the moments that make or break a coaching staff. You don't bring in the recruits, you're not going to win and if you don't win...well I don't need to finish that one for you.

So, as it is every year, the top recruits will fax in their letters of intent and all will be right with the world. Because these kids haven't played a down of football at the college level! That means the sky is the limit or something.

For Utah, it's a chance to cash in all those chips from their Pac-12 invite and Sun Bowl victory.

We'll have updates throughout the day, but if you're really looking for second-to-second news, head on over to Twitter and follow the following accounts: @utahathletics, @utezone, @insidetheutes, and, of course, @blocku.

The first faxes are expected early in the morning, so if you're up around 8:00 MST, get ready for the first wave.

After the jump, review potential Utah commits that are, at the moment, currently undecided.

Star-divide

Alphonso Marsh: Three star cornerback out of Compton, California, Marsh holds offers from Arizona, Tennessee, UCLA, Utah and Washington. Marsh will make his announcement live on CBSLA at 6:15 Salt Lake time.

Probability he signs with Utah: The word is good on Marsh. Expect him to be a Ute by day's end.

Brandon Beaver: Four star cornerback out of Compton, California, Beaver apparently has whittled his list down to California, Utah and Washington. Beaver will make his announcement live on foxsportswest.com at 4:00 Salt Lake time.

Probability he signs with Utah: Uncertain. I want to believe Utah stands a good chance of landing him, and they're definitely in the mix, however, he has favored Washington and Cal lately on Twitter.

Brandon Fanaika: Four star offensive guard from Pleasant Grove, Utah. Fanaika originally committed to Stanford, however, it appears he's opened up his recruitment and is now deciding between BYU, Cal, Stanford and Utah.

Probability he signs with Utah: Lots of crazy internet buzz surrounding Fanaika right now. No one really knows what's real or not - so, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Carlos Lozano: Three star offensive tackle from Monterey Park, California. He holds offers from Kansas, Kansas State, UCLA, Utah, Utah State and Washington State.

Probability he signs with Utah: It appears Lazano has narrowed his list down to Utah & Washington State, but he's not announcing a leader just yet.

Moana Ofahengaue: Three star outside linebacker from Lehi, Utah, Ofaghengau will be making his decision during the International Bowl, which starts on CBSSports Network at 4:00 Salt Lake time.

Probability he signs with Utah: He's looking good - but tune in to see for sure.

Raymond Ford: Three star cornerback out of Gardena, California, Ford is down to Cal, Utah and Washington State.

Probability he signs with Utah: This is one where I think only the player knows which way he's leaning.

The Utes stand a decent shot of getting most these players, so, hopefully, today is a good day.

I get to celebrate Ute's signing day by getting a root canal

and will probably miss most of the news. This year’s class better be worth it!

Excited for signing day, but part of me starting to dislike this. Why?

College football fans all over the country are hoping these high school football players sign with their teams. The list above of undecided/uncommitted football players tells me they want the whole world to wait on them to make a freakin decision. If you ask me, these players act like dang PRIMA DONAS! I’m gonna make my commitment on national TV?!?!?! What the freak?!?!?! Just make a freakin decision!

I hope most of them will sign with Utah, but if they don’t, I won’t really care. Just sign with anyone and get it over with. IMO, the class (I believe) will still be considered the best signing class ever.

Rumor has it Brandon Fanaika has now added BYU and possibly even Cal according to DNews and SLTrib. I see that Brandon Fanaika can’t make up his mind! What is he going to do now, have the local TV stations in Utah televise his commitment?!?!?! Part me hopes he signs with Utah, and party starting to not care where he goes. If he is torn between Utah b/c he loves Utah and Stanford b/c of higher education that is hard. But now you add BYU and Cal, what gives? I know its a huge decision for him to make, I just hope he knows what he really wants.

Other than that, will see who is going to be a true Ute tomorrow.

Star Belly Sneeches

We all know how ‘stars upon thars’ turned out. Eric Weddle and Alex Smith were ‘just’ 2 star recruits.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that we get some ‘good’ football players in this year’s class.

I think Jazzy's under the weather...

The start of the post looks remarkably like last year’s thread. Give him pops though, the prospects (the stuff we care about) are accurate.

Status

on Poutasi? Would like to see the cousins (Poutasi and Fanaika) join Lutui on that O-line. Marsh would be a good one too, 6’2 cornerbacks are not commodities.

Poutasi gave a soft-commit to Utah today.

Good news there. 6-6, 330 lbs. Lots of potential – Probably needs to work out like crazy and get some more muscle under that fat.

Not hearing a peep on our new OC. Rumor was a possible announcement on signing day. Any baseless hearsay?

by pac12ute on Jan 31, 2012 10:07 PM MST reply actions

That was the last update

I don’t like it. If I was an offensive recruit, I would have liked to have met the coordinator before I made a commitment to Utah. Of course, I’d commit to Utah anyway, because it’s Utah, but they’re not all like me!

Is coach Whitt going to call some WR as his hand is over the BYU hat and be like…

Before you pick up that hat…! Our new offensive coordinator is…………..

The Intimidator

by Earnhardt on Jan 31, 2012 10:12 PM MST up reply actions

Rather wait than be disappointed

Have a number of solid offensive recruits lined up without an OC. If its between “Arod get his old job” tomorrow or waiting it out, I’d rather wait. Utah is a good program and should be able to find and select a good candidate. While we’re not yet basking in the Pac12 riches, we should have Chow’s salary available to sign a descent OC.

by pac12ute on Jan 31, 2012 10:20 PM MST up reply actions

You make a good point

In that we shouldn’t just get a guy to have a guy… especially not Arod

…but at the same time, you’ve gotta concede that Chow was the difference for some of our recruits last year. Heck, that’s how we got Travis Wilson to commit a couple of months ago.

We had since before our bowl game to find a replacement… the only interviewing process that’s taken longer than our offensive coordinator was the one we staged for University President! (Who turned out to be in-house!)

So yeah, I am thrilled that we’re doing our due diligence, but I wish we had a good offensive mind in place for at least part of the recruiting process.

The Intimidator

I bet it's Roderick

He is named as the coach who recruited several players, including York — I wager he has known for a while that he would be named OC.

Better not be

McClellon has been a HUGE Utah Recruiter

He’s been trying to get fellow teammates Brandon Beaver, Alphonso Marsh, and Ray Ford to join him here in Utah.

He’s been extremely vocal, and excited about Utah on Twitter. The fact that Utah is even in the final three for any of the above three is due largely in part to McLellon.

Just read on his bio that he is third on the all-time receiving list for California.

Zach Lindsay – 3 star OL
Reginald Porter – 2/3 star athlete/safety
Marc Pouvave – 2/3 star OL JC transfer
Pasoni Tasini – 2 star / NR DE

Marc Pouvave is expected to sign at 11. All the committed 4-stars are in. No official word on any of the fence-sitters Jazzy listed above. Marsh, Ford and Beaver are all expected to make their announcements later this afternoon.

Nice

I think for me, he along with Chase Hanson are the most anticipated and most eagerly awaited recruits. Not to minimize the importance of all the other positions, but it all starts with the QB.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Feb 1, 2012 12:42 PM MST up reply actions

No, it all starts on the Line

The QB gets the pub, but it all starts with the big nasties on the line (True for both sides of the ball), and this class is filled with big nasties.

by UnHoly Ram on Feb 1, 2012 12:44 PM MST up reply actions

Disagree

Line definitely helps, but the NE Patriots have been to 5 superbowls because of Tom Brady and Bellichek,

by Utah-UCLA alum on Feb 1, 2012 12:48 PM MST up reply actions

Yea, And they lost their last and their next superbowl...

… Because the Giants Defensive Line got after Brady non stop.

by UnHoly Ram on Feb 1, 2012 12:51 PM MST up reply actions

the O-line

are interchangeable. Brady is not.

by Utah-UCLA alum on Feb 1, 2012 12:56 PM MST up reply actions

Funny because since the core of their OL left

The frequency of trips to the Superbowl has decreased.

Just like everything you need more than an OL, but even the Best QB isn’t going to a superbowl without a good offensive line.

by UnHoly Ram on Feb 1, 2012 12:58 PM MST up reply actions

The reason it's called a team

Without the D-line getting pressure up front any quarterback is going to tear apart the best Defensive Backfield. Without a good line, a quarterback won’t be to hit his receivers no matter how great they are.
I think because linemen don’t get the “sexy” stats, they don’t get the recognition they deserve.

you can definitely tell which postion I played.

Taking a look at last years commit list

I know it’s hard/unfair to judge a class after one year (except the JC kids who are brought in to make a difference right away)

The names that jump out to me are:

John White: Three Star- No explanation needed ;)

Kieth McGill: Four Star- I hope last year was just fluke and he becomes a real force, cause he was really hyped coming in.

Eric Rowe: Three Star- Even though McGill had all the hype, it was Rowe that made an immediate impact, yes I know McGill got hurt but having another freshman all-american speaks for itself.

Harvey Langi: four star- Like McGill, we had high hopes for him, but since he failed to separate himself in fall camp (plus the emergence of JWIV) he had a minor impact. That said though, we have to remember he WAS a freshman.

Josh Gordon Keith McGill Denham

Josh Gordon is no longer a Ute. Keith McGill will be worth the hype… never was healthy last year and the coaches made some poor decisions with hinm. But the Switch to corner will give us a nearly shutdown CB and somebody who can play with a K Allen, Marquess Wilson, a handful of USC wideouts…

Denham looks like the hulk and has a chance to be a mix of one of these new hybrid TEs and Plexico.

Be excited. And dream as big as possible… because thats what the limits are for this upcoming season.

Tom Cella was getting his info from a Jazzy thought...

Not a bad way to end the day...

Marsh wavered a bit when it came out Ford was going to Cal, but I’m glad he stuck it out and he’ll definitely have a better shot getting to the NFL here than playing at Washington.

Thomas and Marsh

should be a good CB duo for a few years.

Good class.

Dolphins and sharks are natural enemies. Dolphins are like, "Quit eating us," and sharks are like, "Stop smiling all the time, you morons."

How good we can be

all rests on the shoulders of Jordan Wynn literally. With a good quarterback our offense could be so potent! Great WR’s and TE’s, Greats RBs, should be a decent OLine. And our D is always stout. maybe a ? at LB. Ready for september already but i’ll settle for the spring game
