Let's start talking about basketball

With the football season going as terribly as it is, and the basketball season fast approaching, I think it's time we start talking about basketball. Now, by no means am I saying we give up on talking about the football team just because they're doing poorly, just that we need a glimmer of something not completely awful.

So what are you all thinking about the basketball team? Personally, I'm feeling optimistic. The true fanatic in me could even see the team doing so well as getting into the tournament. The realist in me knows that's not happening, but I still do believe there will be improvement over last year. Furthermore, I'm going to project that the basketball team ends with a better W/L% than the football team, unless the football team pulls off a miracle and ends up above .500.

Last year's team was bad. We all know this. But there were things that made me believe the team was on the right track, despite the horrible record. First off, we actually ran plays. They often were executed poorly, or we were simply out-played by more talented defenders, but the team actually ran plays. Under both Boylen and Giacoletti, I don't remember seeing plays being run at all - other than when Coach Bogut was on the floor calling them.

Not only did the team run plays, but they also played defense - or at least tried to. Again, there were problems with execution and talent level, and as such they often gave up large point totals. However, in watching the team play, they did things they had never done under the previous two coaches: they ran, they played hard, and they gave it their all on both ends of the floor. Similar to Jon Hays, however, their talent level wasn't equal to their heart, and it showed.

This year, Coach Krystkowiak has addressed many of the glaring faults we had on our team (like having numerous players under 6 feet tall, and only one over 6'9"). He's also done some good recruiting - like managing to convince the best player in Utah and 97th best in the country to come play for a team that had just had a 6-win season. That's something some people want to turn their noses up at, but I think it's impressive. Furthermore, the team as a whole is more talented than last year.

What about all of you? What's your outlook for the basketball team? Will they do better than football? Will they be worse than last year? Are you Coach K fans, or Coach K haters? Will Loveridge be able to step up in the next level? What do you think?
