Karl Malone & son chat it up with Kyle Whittingham

At tonight's Jazz game (a loss to the Spurs), Karl Malone, his son Karl Malone Jr., and Kyle Whittingham met up and had a quick chat.

Karl Malone's son is an OG out of Ruston, Louisiana who is being recruited by Utah, among some other heavy-hitters.

Malone's history with the state, the fact he's a beloved former Jazzman here, might indicate the Utes have at least a passable chance of landing the Cedar Creek junior.

Here's a photo tweeted out of the three talking after, or maybe before, the Jazz lost.

Of course, it could be quite some time before we know Malone's decision.

Is this a recruiting violation? shit.

No, it's not.

If Kyle had bought the tickets, that’s a different world. And he can’t go to the kid’s house or school, but going to a sporting event in your own town is fine, and talking to kids there is fine. Kyle can call the kid 90 times a week, he’s allowed to interact with him in person as long as it’s not a dead period. If it IS a dead period (I don’t keep track of that stuff), then the kid can come up to Kyle, Kyle just can’t go up to the kid. Don’t stress it, Kyle knows the rules.

oops

I wasn’t aware of a lot of that so thanks! Other than that, I guess I should have put tic in…

That kid sounds like a beast

I don’t want to get too hung up on one potential recruit — some high school kid no less, but I’ll never be disappointed when we bring a super stud to the U, whether he’s the son of a local NBA legend or the son of a diner cook.

Still, it would be funny on a couple of levels:
1) To see Karl’s offspring “pick a side” in the local rivalry. It’s one of those things that would get in the craw of some BYU fans (not that I think any rational ones among them think they have a shot — but many of them grew up Malone fans, and would hate to see him kissing the U’s ring in an way).

2) If I recall, Karl has another son, or two. One of them is named after him, if I recall. Just like we got the Kruger pipeline, it would be funny to see us open a Malone pipeline.

Good luck to the kid wherever he goes. I feel bad for any notable athlete’s kid who also pursues sports. I can’t imagine having to live in the shadow of a father who you’ll be lucky (literally) to match, let alone eclipse.

Of course one of them is named after him...hence the Karl Malone Jr.! ;)

Malone is going to be one of the best players at his position next year and it’s going to be very tough for Utah to land him. Still, the fact his dad played here, he grew up here and Whitt is already laying the seeds, at least gives the Utes some chance.

Karl Malone do what Karl Malone gotta do

Interesting. As a life-long Jazz fan, it would be awesome to see “Malone” on the back of a Ute football jersey. There are a lot of similarities between the way KW runs his program and the way the Jazz were run under Coach Sloan – blue collar, no excuses, “bring your lunch pail” mentality. For that reason, I could see Karl really wanting his kid to play in Utah for Coach Whittingham. And if Jr has half the work ethic of his old man in the weight room or on the field, look out. Looking at his list of suitors though, it would be a coup for Utah.

Work ethic

You took the words right out of my mouth. If the kid has the same work ethic as his dad (and I have NO reason to believe that Karl didn’t raise Karl Jr that way) then this kid is an asset. Do it, Whit!

Here's a question

How does ESPN peg Stockton as only the fourth best point guard in NBA history? I remember when Pat Riley called him the best small man (non front line) to play the game—ever.

"Gentlemen, it is better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football."--John Heisman

"I'm not upset about the U allegations," tweeted Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez, who pitched at Miami. "I'm mad we didn't win anything while we were cheating."

Isn't being the 4th best PG of ALL TIME really, really, really good?

If you’re in the top five, it’s an honor and pundit simply splitting hairs as to the order.

It was a pleasure and honor to watch Stockton play. His assists record will never be touched, and probably his steals, too. I’ll never forget “The Shot.” He’s in the HOF where he belongs. None of the rest matters to me aside from the fact that I desperately wish he could have gotten a ring.

Agreed, I just cannot think of three better

It's not really a fair comparison, because they do different things, but Magic was a point guard, so were Walt Frazier, Oscar Robertson, and Isaiah Thomas.

I’m a Jazz fan, so I’d be willing to argue with anyone on the merits of Stockton v. Magic, Frazier, Robertson, or Thomas, but they’ve all got at least a claim at the top spot.

Gotta admit

Shawn Kemp Jr vs Karl Malone Jr has a nice draw to it!

by Skeptical Dawg on Feb 22, 2012 11:41 PM MST reply actions

How many Shawn Kemp Jrs are there?

I’ll be the first to admit that I couldn’t keep up with Shawn Sr’s prolificacy, so there may be more than one, but the only Shawn Kemp Jr that I know of plays basketball at UW. Being that Karl Malone Jr is being recruited to play football I’m not sure that there will be much of a draw to see Kemp Jr vs Malone Jr.
