Travis Wilson vs. Chase Hansen
So, I know football season is over, but we dont even know what kind of offense BJ will run or who will run it. So, for the fun of it, let's count out Wynn and Hays and focus on the newbies, Travis Wilson and Chase Hansen. Who do you think is the best quarterback of the two, the best for which particular offensive style, and the likeliest to give Utah its best chance at getting to the Rose Bowl (which isn't always the same as best QB)?

Hmmm
Good questions. I think as they are now, Wilson is the better QB by a pretty wide margin. Hansen looks more comfortable carrying the ball than throwing it; I don’t love his throwing motion and he seems to make decisions a little slowly. He’s a dynamic player, but looks more like a WR to me than a QB, when I watch him on film.
I think Wilson is significantly better for a pro-style offense, and it’s obvious to me that Hansen would be the choice for an option attack. However, people are theorizing that we’ll return to a spread… and I still think I would go with Wilson. He’s mobile enough to evade pressure, and I liked his decision making skills in the film I’ve seen. I worry that Hansen would be a run-first kind of player.
I’m going to go with Wilson again on the Rose Bowl question. We have tremendous depth and strength at wide receiver, and I see Wilson as being able to capitalize on that.
I like Hansen, I just believe he’ll be lining up for us on the outside.

I agree with you
Hansen’s a good QB who can throw, but apparently this was the first year where people really saw him as a QB. I think that he should probably redshirt this year, learn as much as he can, then do his mission and come back ready to take over after Wilson graduates.
Wilson can actually run pretty well too
So as I’ve said in other posts I think we’ll be seeing elements of the pro-style and spread next season.

Yeah
I’d say he’s ‘mobile’ rather than a runner. I don’t see him taking off around the edge for 15 yards ever, but with his size, I can see him turning a broken play into a 4-6 yard gain. I also think he’s quick enough to evade pressure.

TW vs CH
I am going to take the lazy man’s path and say play both. I know that there will be many that say one or none, but I think you can utilize the talents of both if you do it wisely. Play them like Leak/Tebow or like Neil O’Donnell/Kordell Stewert.
Wilson would be my starting QB and looks to me to be more FBS ready. However, Hansen is such an athlete you can’t keep him off the field. Give him reps in a “Slash”, or “Wildcat” role. If they are both in the huddle, defenses would have to be on their heels.
And no, this would not be a Heaps/Nelson scenerio as long as the coaches can keep egos in check and make sure that Hansen knew his “slash” role. Sometimes playing short yardage QB and other times playing wide out or halfback.

I like both of these guys
but if Hansen is third-string after spring ball, he should either red-shirt or go on that mission now. If he goes on his mission, I hope Whit has a dearelder.com account to keep tabs on Hansen. Remember he went to great lengths to leave AF in high school and if he is going to get a better look and playing time at the TDS, who knows…
he won't get more looks down there
because of a few main reasons:
1. BYU just brought in Tanner Mangum, an Elite 11 MVP who I’m actually betting will take Nelson’s place this year (please let it be so, I really want Mangum to be introduced to Star and our D for the first time as the QB, not from the sidelines). As of right now, Hansen would be the number 3 QB there as well.
2. BYU was recruiting him either for defense or as an athlete, they really didn’t start looking at him as a QB until late this season.
So, I think if Wynn and Wilson beat him out, he’ll redshirt, get experience, and go on his mission.
Mangum is a Sign and Send
Paperwork has already been submitted. He’ll be leaving on his mission soon. It’s Nelson this year. Next year Taysom Hill, I believe it is comes back from his mission to take over in 2013 for a few years while Mangum goes on his mission and reshirts.
