So, I've been chilling in MN here for the summer before I head back to the U this fall, and some discussions with people here and on Cougarboard actually caught my attention. Now on CB, I keep hearing a lot of people talk about the BYU name and how it is recognized throughout the country and is such a great, strong brand. However, when a bunch of family, friends and acquaintances here I go to the U, here's how the conversation tends to go:

"Oh, that's the one in Salt Lake City, right? I hear they have a great program out there. . . hey, don't they have another school out there in. . .what is it, Orem? Ogden"

This is where I jump in: "That's Utah State. Do you mean Provo? That's BYU"

"Ohhh, ok. Are they any good of a school?"

Considering that variations of this conversation have occurred multiple times throughout the US and Europe (parents were ex-pats), and even with people who travel to Utah on business occasionally, it really has me raising the question of who has more name recognition, the U or BYU?

So, I'm asking you guys to give me your instances of similar conversations, showing places where either the U or BYU has more name recognition. Can be anywhere in the world, I'm just sick of hearing cougar fans preach about the "BYU Brand" when all of my experiences show me otherwise.
