Looks like Harvey Langi going on a mission is official

The official Utah Athletics twitter feed is reporting that Harvey Langi has accepted a call to serve in the Florida Tampa Mission for the LDS church. He will leave for the MTC on July 25.

I know we have a lot of folks that read BlockU that may not be familiar with how LDS missions work. When Harvey enters the Missionary Training Center in Provo, he will spend three weeks there (assuming he speaks English, if he speaks Spanish, he will be there for 9 weeks learning that language).

After completing his training at the MTC, he will fly to his mission and be there for 17 6-week periods (again that is if he speaks english, if he speaks spanish it will be 16 6-week periods). These periods are called "transfers".

I know, I know, you are saying "who cares?". My point is this; if you do the math, that is 105 weeks of being gone, or roughly two years and one week. That means Harvey will be home the first week of August in 2014 (this is also assuming that he completes his service). The first week of August generally also means the first week of fall camp.

I don't know how many BlockU readers have gone on an LDS mission, but I can tell you that it would be VERY difficult to jump right back into football that quickly. (My little bro is doing that right now at a college here in state). So, it looks like we might not be seeing Langi on the field again until 2015.

At any rate, best of luck to Harvey, and Go Utes!
