I think we can all agree that the Utah fan who tried to taunt Bronco Mendenhall as he left the field after the Utah/BYU game was acting like a total and complete moron. And it's clear from the video that whatever courage he had that drove him to confront the coach disappeared completely the moment he was challenged. Congratulations, buddy - you embarrassed yourself in front of thousands of people.
But what I don't understand is the praise Mendenhall is getting for the way he handled the situation. Don't coaches generally teach their players to ignore opposing fans or taunting from players? A model coach would have continued to the locker room acting as if he hadn't heard anything. It's not like the fan was in his way, either. Bronco had to turn around and advance toward the guy to give him that evil eye.
I'm not going to vilify Mendenhall. He could have handled the situation much more poorly than he did. But the BYU fans who are painting his acts as heroic? I just don't get it.
