The Utah softball team won in thrilling fashion over BYU on Friday afternoon at Dumke Family Softball Stadium by a score of 3-2. A walk-off single by Hailey Hilburn brought around pinch-runner Aubrey Peterson in the bottom of the seventh for the game winning run.
Utah entered the final frame trailing by a run, but Bridget Castro singled to lead off the inning, her second hit of the game, and was followed by a Heather Bowen double that tied the score. After a pair of substitutions, Hilburn provided the thrilling ending.
BYU opened up the scoring in the second after a walk and Alexa Strid gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with a single. Utah countered in the bottom half of the inning with a Anissa Urtez infield single, followed by a Castro RBI double. Both teams had chances to score later in the game, but inning ending double plays ended the threat for both sides. Utah was able to avoid a couple of other tight situations throughout the game, to keep them within a run, and a chance to win at the end.
Utah will play the winner of Friday night’s BYU/Fordham elimination game, and will have two chances to advance tomorrow.
