Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

Is BYU Living In Fantasyland? It Seems Likely.

I just read a titanic write-up by the voice of BYU's Cougars -- one Greg Wrubell -- on KSL's website. In it, he basically paints a rosy picture of BYU's status as a football independent. Dozens of head-shakes and delusions later, it led me to ask myself, "are all BYU fans this delusional?"

Among the insinuations Wrubell makes is the notion that BYU and Notre Dame are more alike than they are different... that BYU made the right choice by not joining the Big East... and that Utah will stop scheduling BYU because they are afraid. Wrubell even states as fact that BYU has never even been in talks with the Big XII for admittance, when this is clearly false.

Utah Basketball Snags Another Shooter

Despite the speed bumps that have jarred the Runnin' Ute program this spring, Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak continues to build the 2012-13 team into one that looks quite offensively potent.

The university announced this week that Jarred DuBois, a 6'3" 180 lb. sharp-shooting guard from Loyola Marymount University has signed up for a one-and-done season with the Utes. A graduate of LMU, he does not have to sit out a year before joining Utah, according to NCAA eligibility rules.

Post-Spring Updated Depth Chart Notes

After looking over the newest depth chart I found a few interesting things:

  1. Jon Hays is back as the OR to Travis Wilson at second string quarterback after being left off the depth chart.
  2. Harvey Langi is listed as the backup to John White IV with Kelvin York.
  3. Junior Salt is listed as a defensive tackle. There was some confusion over which side of the line he would play on.
  4. Thretton Palamo is up to second string at the defensive end so it seems like he will be getting some solid playing time. With Fakahafua and Palamo we should have constant pressure coming from the left side.

I'm psyched for my first football season as a U student and being in the MUSS! Go Utes!

Bergstrom the lone Ute draftee?

Pretty surprised that Tony B was the only Ute taken in the NFL Draft. When I saw him go at the end of round 3, I figured there would be at least one other Ute that would be taken in the final four rounds.

Why not? No Matt Martinez? No Conroy Black? No Derrick Shelby?

And yet Utah State had three players drafted, including BOTH of their running backs?

I guess the only consolation is that at least BYU had zero players drafted... though that's not too unusual.

How good is John White IV?

Going into 2012 that is all I can really wonder? He is consistently being forgotten by top sports sources across the nation... from ESPN to Bleacher Report... many people either want to give him a sentence or two or totally fail to acknowledge his existence...

Last year was amongst the most impressive seasons I have seen in any sport at any level... John White as we all know carried the Utes to 8 victories (along with a stout D)... he CARRIED us.

The kid made mince meat of our record books when the defenses knew he was coming...

Guys like the Dirty Bird Jamal Anderson came outta the U and flapped his wings to the super bowl and over 1800 yards in a single season... Mike Anderson came outta the U and plowed his way for 1500 yards and 15 tds as a rookie (granted TomaHawkReds grandma coulda gone for 1000 with that Broncos offense...)

my point is Utah has a solid history of running backs... and comin outta Juco the wolfman devours all records in his path... with little help.

This year we are down 1.5 NFL tackles ... but Stevens and Brenner should be studs with some incoming JUCO tackles to attempt to fill Tony and John's shoes...

I anticipate John White IV to grab the attention of the nation... whether it is slicing up USC that does it or a consistent 125-150 yards a game... our backfield is deep... which will truly benefit the wolfman... as he will be fresh for 4 quarters... Jordan Wynn and our depth at WR will assist JW IV as well.

I can see him breaking off 6-8 yards per carry and while many people do not believe he has much of an NFL future... I see his running style to be similar to Sproles... He CANNOT do all the things Sproles can do i.e. change the game with his receiving skill set... but they run the same way... hard... quick... and shifty as can be.

I have faith in the Wolfman leading us to pastures of Roses...

what are your thoughts?

Renan Lenz and Utah Basketball

to all those crying about what an idiot Coach K is and how it is his fault all these clowns left... and so on and so forth... you have to understand you cannot take the sinking ship Boylen left him with and turn it around within years...

Clearly it got worse before better... but this next year if Foster is healthy we will improve. Landing Renan Lenz after everyone panicked because a few Mormon/BYU influenced newspapers and the yahoo "the joke of a sporting source" .com reported the controversy of Josh Hearlihy proves what a none story that truly was. Then that joke of a SLCC article with BYU needing to thank us... joke.

Utah basketball is trending up... Seymour from Georgia is far better than Chris Hines... the majority of those JUCO thugs has been filtered out (good riddance) Coach K is in the midst of turning this program around...

The naysayers who cry because Jordan Wynn throws a few meaningless picks in a Spring game then nut over Adam Schulz tossing a few good balls, and cry when they read an article picking apart the U of U basketball in the joke news sources in this state need to re-evaluate who they are a fan of. The negativity is nonsense and futile... how bout you are positive and cheer and knock off the petty bullshit you are so emphatic about.

Get a clue. Renan Lenz is a far better basketball player than anyone BYU landed... why doesn't the dessert news report that?

Go utes and real utah fans.

Wynn being lazy?

OK, spring ball's done, and a few surprises came out of the red white game, such as good LB play, a solid backup RB corps, and so on. However, there was one aspect of the spring that was surprising in a negative way. As mentioned by some in other discussions, Wynn came off as a bit lazy and lackadaisica. Whereas Wilson and Hays have worked their butts off and made the most of their opportunities, Wynn's come off as "eh" in spring games. I mean, I've been saying how his throwing motion is much better, his balls have more zip, and he's making good decisions. However, his fumble, his Int's, and some of the bad reads he made are starting to add up over the spring. Hopefully, I'm just judging to hard, but I'm scared that Wynn might have taken it to his head that he's the starter no matter what. If that's the case, that's on BJ and Whit's heads. Wynn definitely needs to step up in the fall considering that if BJ wants experience at the QB spot, he has Hays; if he wants talent, Wilson has that; and if he wants toughness, both Hansen and Wilson have that. Wynn needs to realize that he’s not irreplaceable and step up in fall camp or the ball should be handed to Hays or Wilson (my preference is Hays based on his experience and the fact that this spring he showed he’s put in the time and has improved immensely, but I would have NO problems with starting Wilson). However, I’ll withhold judgment until fall camp and hope I'm wrong, especially given all of the talent he has around him and the potential for this year's team.

So, what do y'all think?

don't sleep on these guys

The Utes are primed for a great season and in my opinion have more talent than 2005 or 2009.

Several players who's names have yet to surface by the majority of Utah fans, and have failed to warrant a crumby Lya article...

Griff McNabb who the majority of Utes fans know as the token little white boy returning punts and rarely far catching... an intelligent football player would admire his guts and yet hate that same fearlessness at the same time... I anticipate Griff emerging as a threat in the passing game (for those of you who really know football picture a poor man's Ryan Swope... Texas a&m ... while Swope is 6 feet... the two have many similarities) if you have watched the WRs practice this spring you will see Griff dropping the least passes and Griff consistently running crisp routes.

Personally I like Griff far more than the soft and inconsistent Reggie Dunn... but Reggie is obviously a better athlete.

Jacoby Hale might not bust on the scene with too big a splash this fall... but I think he will be an impact player when he is on the field. The kid is built like a lean ox... and is athletic as anyone on the defense. Hopefully they fatten him up over the summer with 12-15 lbs of angus beef... but either way I like him to be in the back field making plays several times a game... and potentially a fan favorite. (furthermore he is fearless and has made many stand out plays in practice one time rallying the defense and resulting in John White in frustration going after Hale... the situation ultimately ended with Hale legitimately owning John White on back to back players and being rewarded by coaches and teammates.

I realize my write up is becoming a novel ... so I will only include one more and save the rest for another day that isn't quiet as beautiful as today...

Lastly is Terrell Reese... and the scrimmage this past Saturday (pick 6 and two plays in the back field) is only the tip of the iceberg for what Reese truly is. The transition from WR to Safety wasn't simple on the kid... but now he is getting the hang of it and will be a force to be reckon with. I would say he has the best ball skills out of anyone on defense... Blechan and Mo Lee included. I anticipate this kid making plays even if Rowe and Blech see most of the PT... He is a pac-12 caliber star and as he continues to adjust to defense... and mentally adjust to the pac12 game... look for him to shine...

I have many more nuggets of dark horses and future Ute stars... feel free to agree/disagree or share your own up and coming studs...
