Bergstrom the lone Ute draftee?
Pretty surprised that Tony B was the only Ute taken in the NFL Draft. When I saw him go at the end of round 3, I figured there would be at least one other Ute that would be taken in the final four rounds.
Why not? No Matt Martinez? No Conroy Black? No Derrick Shelby?
And yet Utah State had three players drafted, including BOTH of their running backs?
I guess the only consolation is that at least BYU had zero players drafted... though that's not too unusual.
College football likely heading to a four-team playoff
The BCS is dead. Long live the BCS Four-Team Playoff?
That's what it's looking like. The BCS has announced its proposals for a four-team playoff and will now present those options to conference commissioners, who'll ultimately decide which one they want.
So, what are your thoughts on a four-team playoff? Is it enough? Too radical of a change? Too tied to the BCS? Do you like Utah's chances down the road if, err, when college football adopts these changes?
In '04 and '08, it's unlikely an undefeated Utah team would've qualified for the playoffs. Of course, now that they're a member of the Pac-12, going 12-0, or even 11-1, most likely would secure them a spot in the playoff - at the expense of a non-BCS team, of course.
This is the way I see it: The playoffs help produce a truer champion than what we've had. With four teams, instead of two, it's not hard to see why this is the case. However, it's hard to imagine any non-BCS team, outside an amazing multi-season run or extreme parity among other BCS teams, getting into this new playoff. Especially if it's based on a certain BCS formula. Only TCU in '08 '10 would have qualified for a spot in the postseason under the current BCS rules. That's not going to sit well with those other non-BCS conference presidents.
But do you like it?
Utes pick up a pair of commits in basketball & football
Though Utah basketball has been stung lately with a slew of bad news, today at least offered a reprieve, as Brazilian forward Renan Lenz committed to the program Wednesday morning. It's a good get and hopefully a sign the program is finally starting to turn things around. Lenz held offers from USC, as well as Auburn, who really pushed hard to recruit him toward the end.
This is welcoming news as Givon Crump, who the coaches were recruiting as of late, decided to sign with Cal State Fullerton, though it appears the coaches might have cooled on him toward the end of the recruiting cycle. Still, we need talent and bodies and Lenz is a great addition to the program. Hopefully, as I said, this is the true start of our rise back to the top.
As for football, they picked up the commitment of California OL LeRoy Tanoia. I don't much about Tanoia except that he's LDS, the half-brother of Kalani Sitake (so, yeah, whiffing out on this recruit might've been bad) and held offers from BYU, Nebraska and UCLA.
So, a good news day for Utah recruits. The Utes are now up to four commits for the 2013 football class, which has to be more than they had at this point last year.
I guess that Pac-12 thing is paying off, eh?
Vote Utah for College Game Day
Vote to have Utah appear in a College Game Day Commercial. Voting ends May 2nd and we have work to do. Spread the word.
It's time Utah not only competed on the athletic field, but the fan field as well. Let's keep defying the stigma that others have about the University of Utah. Be sure to share the link with friends and family. Tweet it. Post it. Email it. Do whatever you can to spread the Utah Pride.

John L. Smith, exhausted with coaching Weber State for all of 3 1/2 months, bolts for Arkansas
Hey John L., you're still a big dick.
Cougars can thank Utes for their latest recruit
This is just downright inexcusable and absolutely embarrassing for the program. I still am not ready to give up on our coaches, but this whole month has been a PR nightmare for Utah basketball. We need some good news fast because these stories are killing me.
Quarterback depth steals show at Red-White game
No, there is not a quarterback controversy. Jordan Wynn, despite his so-so performance at today's spring game, will be starting for Utah this season barring injury.
Still, it's good to know that, unlike last year, there appears to be some serious options if Wynn does happen to go down.
I liked what the quarterbacks did. Wynn did have two interceptions and a fumble, though, his last interception came on what was pretty much a Hail Mary pass, so, I'm not going to fault him too much for that one. Jon Hays, who backed up Wynn and started the second half of the season after Wynn went down last year, was probably the best looking quarterback of the day. He finished with one touchdown pass, no turnovers and 114 yards. Adam Schultz, a walk on quarterback, surprised, as he finished with a touchdown and 95 yards on 4 of 5 passing.
Travis Wilson, backing up Hays for the White Team, was 8 of 12 for 72 yards, though he didn't pass for a touchdown.
In the end, the Red team won 22-21 on a Harvey Langi jump pass to Quinton Pedroza during a two-point conversion. An exciting finish to a pretty exciting day.
Ultimately, this team has some talent at quarterback. Hopefully Wynn is more consistent once fall rolls around, and it's nice seeing that even though he gave it his all, Hays isn't the only option if Wynn can't make it through the whole season unscathed.
I've commented on how much I like Utah's receivers and once again, I feel like gushing over Dres Anderson. He's good. Really good. It's going to be exciting watching him grow over the next couple seasons.
John White IV, the Wolfman, didn't play, so, the running game was mostly left to Kelvin York, Jarrell Oliver, and Langi.
So, spring ball is officially over. You don't want to take too much from this scrimmage, but I feel the team has to like where it's at heading into fall camp. Hopefully it continues.
Finally, I'm not buying that only 13,500 people showed up. I was at last year's game where supposedly 20,000 attended and this crowd looked just as large as that one. C'mon, Utah, don't underestimate your fans!
