Matt Asiata off to solid start

Utah kicked off the first day of camp yesterday and the biggest question on the offensive end made quite an impression. Whittingham told the Deseret News that he really liked the quickness he saw from junior college transfer Matt Asiata and that he picked things up rather quickly. Whittingham called him an intelligent football player, while Asiata said though it will be a hard season, he's looking forward to working with the team.

It's not clear if Asiata will start at running back, as Darryl Poston is currently pegged the starter on the depth chart. But Asiata did say in order for that to happen he will need to work on getting the plays down.

Other notes from camp:

  • Marquis Wilson has returned with the Utes, however it's not clear how many games he will miss at the start of this season. Coach Whittingham said the suspensions will directly tie to the outcome of his legal troubles. Wilson was arrested after driving drunk and being in possession of alcohol as a minor. The team expects to have news on his legal matters by next week, however it's unclear if that will be the case.
  • Brian Johnson, Steve Tate, Joe Jiannoni and Kyle Gunther have been selected team captains by the Ute players.
  • Utah will have a short practice today and then next week will move practice over to the Ute Baseball Field. That area, located just south-east of the indoor practice facility, is far more accessible to fans that want to view the action. Though remember, practices are officially closed, so if you go, be on your best behavior and stay out of the team's way.
