This is my first post on gymnastics, a sport that I hope to cover the entire season. Though I don't know much about the sport, I do know enough to probably get by...so here it goes.
#2 Utah opened their season with a 196.325-195.975 victory over #5 UCLA last night at the Huntsman Center. 11,418 fans were on hand to witness Utah's close win over their western rival. Deadlocked throughout most of the night, the Utes struggled on the balance beam, falling behind the Bruins, but they ultimately pulled it out and took the lead, and eventually the win, on the floor exercise.
Utah's Kristina Baskett and Jessica Duke both had career nights against the Bruins. Baskett won the all-around with an impressive 39.60 and posted a 9.90 on every event of the night. Duke, a junior, scored 39.00 for Utah, while freshman Annie DiLuzio scored 9.775 or better in all three of her events. The Red Rocks are now 1-0 on the season and face Washington Friday night at the Huntsman Center.
