Utes hold first scrimmage

Football season is slowly kicking into full gear and today that was evident with Utah holding its first scrimmage of the year.

The perfect day was the backdrop to a successful scrimmage which saw Utah's offense perform pretty well under the leadership of Brian Johnson. Johnson connected on 9 of 16 passes for 68 yards, while Tommy Grady threw for 98 yards on 9 of 12 passes. Neither threw an interception, but they also failed to throw a touchdown as well.

The two quarterbacks connected with Brian Hernandez six times for 77 yards, who was the scrimmage's leading receiver.

The running game, still very much up in the air, yielded some results. Ray Stowers rushed for 59 yards on 9 carries, Darrell Mack ran the ball 10 times for 43 yards, while last year's starter Darryl Poston had 22 yards before a sprained ankle forced him to leave the scrimmage.

Utah's defense held well, not allowing any scores. Gabe Long recorded a sack and R.J. Stanford intercepted Chad Manis -- a juco transfer.

This year's Red & White game will be played on the 21st of April. Ute Fans Net will be throwing a tailgate party prior to the game. The event starts at 9:00am and I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the atmosphere.
