Mountain West Conference basketball power rankings

A pretty exciting week and hopefully an even better one is on the horizon. After a couple of losses last week to some top teams, it's clear there isn't a favorite to win the championship just yet.

Rank Team Comments
1 The Rebels probably have two of the most impressive wins thus far in conference play, beating the Aztecs in San Diego and dominating BYU by 29 at home. The schedule this week is fairly easy, with a road game against TCU and then a home contest Saturday against the Lobos. If the Rebels can run their record to 6-1 this week, they'll be in pretty good standing.
2 With their ugly loss to UNLV well behind them, the Cougars got an impressive home win over San Diego State (even if it was questionable) and then massacred the Lobos. Now it gets a bit harder for the road wary Cougars, though, as they travel to play Air Force Wednesday and then Wyoming in Laramie Saturday.
3 The Aztecs looked poised to solidify its spot at the top of the conference, however, two big losses to BYU and UNLV at home really set them back. They can back bounce, though, with a fairly easy road game against Colorado State tonight.
4 The Falcons only had one game last week, defeating Colorado State at home Tuesday. It was a big win for the Falcons, as they move to 3-2 on the season. If they can beat BYU at home, Air Force could position itself for a solid run.
5 The Lobos are proving they're a solid home team and not a very good road team, just like in years past. After finally prevailing in OT against the Utes last Tuesday, the Lobos followed it up with an embarrassing 17 point loss to BYU in Provo (and the game wasn't even that close). With a game at UNLV Saturday, don't look for those road woes to change anytime soon.
6 The good news: Utah hasn't been blown out yet in conference play. The bad news: Utah still hasn't found a way to win close games. After blowing a 7 point lead late in their game against the Lobos -- eventually losing in OT -- Utah drubbed TCU and climbed to within one game of .500. Now is the chance to reach above that, however, with a home game against Wyoming tomorrow and then what should be a likely win at Colorado State Saturday.
7 A week ago it appeared as if TCU would become the surprise team in the conference this season and maybe they still will. But then they went to Salt Lake and lost by 17 to Utah. And just like that, the Frogs look to be downtrodden once again. If they can beat UNLV at home Wednesday, maybe things will get back on track.
8 Hey, what do you know, the Pokes actually won a game. Too bad it came against the worst team in the conference. Will they follow it up with a victory over Utah Wednesday? Probably not, but if they do the unthinkable, it could turn things around if they did.
9 Yeah, the Rams pretty much suck. That's all I've got to say about that.
