Is there more to Harvey Langi and his mission decision story?

First of all, I am LDS and ultimately support his decision to do what he thinks is best. I say that as a disclaimer so that readers of the post will know that this is not a bash on the decision to go. That being said, I have to wonder about the timing of his decision.

Did he tell the coaching staff he was planning to leave on a mission just months before the season started? If so, I doubt he would have received as many reps in the Spring. Those precious reps could have been given to someone playing in the 2012-13 campaign.

If he did not tell them his plans, was what he did respectful to the coaches and team? Reports indicate that he was going to play a bigger role this year, but you have to wonder why he'd leave then. Did he find out that was not the case and decide to go based on that knowledge?

Is there more to this story than is being reported? Something just seems odd about this. Maybe I'm over-thinking it. As you can see from my screen name, I like a good conspiracy theory.

Any thoughts?
