The Utah Volleyball team is on a roll. A week after sweeping the Los Angeles schools, the Utes added to their winning ways defeating the Washington State Cougars in four sets 3-1.
The opening set Washington State came out on fire, storming to a 7-3 score leading into a Utah timeout. The Utes came firing back with four straight to even the match at seven. Freshman Adora Anae, who finished the match with 14 kills, got the majority of those kills in the first set, scoring six points. Anae's work at the net helped Utah push their lead to 17-10. Freshman Carly Trueman used one of her 12 spikes on the night to kill off the set for the Utes 25-20.
Utah took charge right off the bat in the second set 5-1. The Cougars came back with a run of their own. Both teams made runs back and forth. Wazzu were able to finish the set strong, and Kyra Holt's set-winning kill was able to even up the match at one set a piece with a 25-23 set victory.
Washington State looked determined to take the third set, and the lead in the match, but Utah fought back. A back and forth set was finished off when senior Chelsey Schofield-Olsen's kill was ruled to have hit a Cougar blocker's hands as it sailed out of play. The point gave Utah the 25-23 set victory.
The Cougars would open a hard fought fourth set with authority, but the Utes battled, matching every Cougar run in an effort to close out the match and the set. Adora Anae had a pair of kills to assert herself as a force at the net. The Utes closed out the set taking three of the final four points, and the took the fourth set 25-22, and closing out the match 3-1.
Trueman had her first double-double as a Ute adding 10 blocks to her 12 kills. The Utes had 63 kills on the night. Both setters also had double-doubles as senior Kalee Kirby had 26 assists and 13 digs, and junior Kendall Cygan had 20 assists and 10 digs.
The Utes are now 15-10 on the season and 5-10 in Pac 12 play. The are on their first ever three-match Pac 12 winning streak. They hope to continue that streak Saturday at 7 p.m., but they face a tough challenge hosting the No. 2-ranked Washington Huskies.
