The Utah men's basketball team got a feel good win on Friday night, as they blasted Idaho State by a score of 102-72. The Utes were led by Jakob Poeltl's 19 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. Poeltl's size was a big time advantage over the much smaller ISU team, and he was able to control both the boards and the paint all night long. Kyle Kuzma kicked in a double-double of his own with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and has continued his great play at the Huntsman Center, where he struggled a bit down in Puerto Rico this past week. Gabe Bealer came in off the bench and scored 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor, 2-of-2 from 3.
On the night, the Utes shot 59% from the field, while Idaho State shot 38%. The Utes were a lot better from 3 tonight, at 10-of-19. while Idaho State shot 9-of-20. Where the Utes have been most impressive of late, is the free throw line, where they shot 16-of-19 from the line, including Poeltl going 5-of-6 and Kuzma going 7-of-8.
Utah's defense was much better tonight, of course playing Idaho State will help that. However, Utah's guards were more active on the perimeter, and Utah's hands were really active tonight, whether in passing lanes or contesting shots. I liked what I saw much better tonight, but they'll be tested much more going into Wednesday when they play BYU at the Jon M Huntsman Center.
