Spring has sprung and Utah football is off and running now in their second week of spring practices. As of now, not a lot of surprises out of spring ball, especially with such an experienced team coming back for the 2015 campaign. However, there are some things to keep an eye on.
First, now that CJ Poutasi has entered the NFL Draft, how does that change the look of the o-line, and who will step up and solidify this unit? Names like Isaac Asiata, Siaosi Aiono, Sam Tevi and JJ Dielman are still there, which are great building blocks to start with. Also, it appears that Travis Wilson is the best QB on campus, and is looking to be the starter going into fall. As Alex points out in the podcast, Aaron Roderick - Utah's play calling offensive coordinator - is using some of the speedy running backs in the slot a lot, with Bubba Poole (who is spending a little time at wide receiver in spring) and Troy McCormick getting in on some reverses and quick pass plays to get them into space.
On the defensive side of the ball, where are the linebackers, as Steven asks in this episode? They are rotating in a walk on and a returned missionary as Gionni Paul, Jason Whittingham and Jared Norris get healthy. We also touch on the defensive line, and just how crazy deep and scary that position group is.
For special teams, the same old names are there, but Alex brings up one surprise name to watch out for come fall to fill in for Kaelin Clay as the kick and punt returner.
Give this episode of the podcast a listen, as we touch on spring ball after one week, and what to look forward to going forward!
