Athlon Ranks Utah Football Coach Kyle Whittingham 5th best Pac-12 Head Coach

Russ Isabella-USA TODAY Sports

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham was on the hot seat just a year ago, by many fans. After a 9 win season, and potential for a better 2015, the Utah head coach has quieted a lot of critics. In a loaded conference like the Pac-12, where does Kyle Whittingham rank among the other coaches in the league? According to Athlon, Whittingham is the 5th best coach in the Pac-12.

The website ranks Utah right behind Chris Peterson of Washington, which after his first year in the Pac-12, is a bit questionable to me. Considering UW had as many first round NFL picks they did, they should have performed better in 2014. I believe Peterson is a good coach, but the ability to adapt to the Pac-12 has proven hard on the former Boise State coach.

Here's what Athlon had to say about Coach Whitt.

Whittingham has successfully transitioned Utah from a Mountain West team to a solid Pac-12 program in just four years. The Utes don't have the resources or recruiting base of a UCLA or USC, but Whittingham's team knocked off both programs last year as well as Stanford and Michigan en route to a 9-4 record. Utah also finished No. 21 in the final Associated Press poll - it's first top-25 finish since 2009 - and claimed its first winning mark in Pac-12 play (5-4). In his 10-year tenure in Salt Lake City, Whittingham is 85-43 overall and has led his team to eight bowl games.
