Utah Football Redshirt Freshman QB Donovan Isom Transfers

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Redshirt freshman quarterback Donovan Isom has transferred out of Utah to Southeastern Louisiana, according to a tweet of his on Saturday. This is one transfer I didn't really see coming, at least not at this point. Isom redshirted last season, and appeared to be one of the next in line after Travis Wilson and Kendal Thompson move on after this upcoming season.

The big QB has all the measurables and has a strong arm, plus some mobility, but Coach Kyle Whittingham has stated Isom has struggled in practice since joining the program. I just marked that up to youth and inexperience. Isom was one of the highest rated recruits out of Louisiana just a couple of seasons ago, and was a big get for the Utes.

One has to wonder if the return and development of Chase Hansen also had something to do with it. Hansen, who surprised me in spring, has thrust himself into the QB conversation, and would have been in the same class as Isom. When you factor Hansen into the mix, plus Wilson, Thompson, Conner Manning and Brandon Cox, Isom was sitting fifth on the depth chart.

Another factor that may have led to Isom leaving is the fact his family last their house in a fire just a couple months ago, and now he is much closer to his family.

Regardless, we wish the young man the best of luck at his new school, and as we always say, Once a Ute, Always a Ute.

Good luck D-Ice!
