After a one year hiatus, the Battle of the Brothers between Utah and Utah State will add another chapter today Sept. 11, 2015 at 7 p.m. MT at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. Both teams won their season opener, with Utah beating Michigan 24-17 and Utah State defeating Southern Utah 12-9. It will be the first in-state rivalry game for Utah since beating BYU in the 2013 season. Utah holds the all-time series lead 78-29-4 over Utah State. Utah also won the last meeting 30-26 in Rice-Eccles Stadium to open the 2013 season. With no future games scheduled, this could be the last meeting between the two in-state rivals for awhile.
After their big season-opening win over Michigan, the Utes are ranked in both the AP Poll (No. 24) and Amway Coaches Poll (No. 25) for the first time since the final poll of last season. Utah State needed a blocked extra point returned for two points and a punt return touchdown to beat the Thunderbirds in week one.
The Utah that defense performed well against Michigan got a boost with the news this week that junior cornerback Dominique Hatfield has been reinstated to the football team. It remains unknown whether or not he will play in the game against Utah State. He returns to a talented Utah secondary featuring Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week cornerback Justin Thomas, who had a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown in the win against Michigan.
