For the game against UCLA, Utah will wear the handcrafted black helmets first unveiled for the blackout game against USC, white jersey, and black pants. Utah has worn this uniform combination with older versions of the black helmet at Arizona State in 2012 and at Oregon in 2013.

You can read more about the handcrafted helmet here. Each helmet was hand painted and is therefor unique with individual serial numbers. They were made possible due to a generous donation from Dave and Julie Layton of Layton Construction. I spoke with Utah director of equipment operations Kelly Sharitt after the USC game, and he told me the whole project to make this helmet happen took months between design and painting. They truly looked amazing in person as well. Because of all of the effort to make this project come to fruition, wearing them as much as possible is great.
I am a huge fan of the handcrafted black helmet, and I think this is a great uniform combination to utilize that helmet. This uniform is essentially the road version of the blackout uniform. Utah has emphasized black a lot more in the last few seasons. This will be the third time in eight games Utah will don a black helmet (they have never worn black helmets more than three times in one season happening in both 2012 and 2015). For the third season in a row, Utah is wearing a different uniform in each game, and it is a trend I like. It has resulted in Utah wearing many new uniform combinations, many of which have looked great. One combination I want to see with the handcrafted helmet is wearing it with the throwback crimson jersey and black pants.
