Gymnastics Takes on Arizona at Home Tonight

Alex Stark

The No. 7 Utah Red Rocks (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12) host the No. 20 Arizona Wildcats (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) tonight at 6:00 p.m. MT at the Huntsman Center. Utah holds a 57-0 all-time advantage against Arizona, including a record of 20-0 in Salt Lake City. Including Arizona, there are three Pac-12 teams that have never beaten the Red Rocks, the other two are California (15-0) and Washington (49-0-2). Utah has a winning record against every other Pac-12 school and an all-time record of 332-56-4 all-time against Pac-12 schools.

While Monday home meets are not uncommon in Utah's history (they have hosted 80), only five Monday meets have been held in the Huntsman Center in the last 20 years. Utah has a 79-1 all-time record in Monday home meets, winning its first 79 Monday meets before falling to Georgia in 2006 (the last home Monday meet for the Red Rocks). Utah will have two meets this week: Arizona today and a road meet at UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. PT (2 p.m. MT). Both these meets will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.

Arizona is led by first-year head coach Tabitha Yim. Yim was previously an assistant at Stanford for five seasons. She was also a 14-time All-American as a gymnast for Stanford.

Arizona is coming off their strongest performance of the season, a 196.475 in a home loss against UCLA. Utah is coming off their weakest performance of the season: a 196.125 home win over Oregon State. Utah started off strong in that meet but had two falls in the floor exercise.

Utah's poor performance in last week's floor exercise coupled with the season-ending injury to Kari Lee has prompted changes to Utah's floor lineup. Utah's best event is bars where they rank No. 3 in the nation this week (49.292 average), having previously spent the first two weeks of the season at No. 1. Bars also feature Utah's best individual rankings as well, with Baely Rowe ranked No. 4 with a 9.917 season average and Kassandra Lopez ranked No. 6 (9.892 average) in the nation.

Kids are encouraged to dress up like their favorite prince or princess. Be sure to arrive early if you want to get a free light saber/wand.
