The National Association of Collegiate Gymnastic Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) released their list of 2016 regular season All-Americans, and it includes two Utah gymnasts: senior Breanna Hughes and sophomore Maddy Stover.
Hughes ranks in the top 20 in four events: the all-around (No. 7), on vault (No. 12), floor (No. 12) and bars (No. 17). She was named a 2016 All-American in all of those disciplines, first team for the all-around and second team for bars, floor, and vault. Stover was named a second-team All-American on beam (No. 15 in the nation).
With the four honors this year and a second-team on on beam as a freshman at the 2013 NCAA Championships, Hughes is now a five-time All-American. This is Stover's first All-American honor. Gymnastics has regular season All-Americans (which began in 2013) and All-Americans named at the NCAA Championships (which has existed since 1982, when the NCAA adopted women's sports).
Including Hughes and Stover, Utah is up to six All-Americans on its current roster. Kari Lee and Kailah Delaney are both three-time All-Americans, and Kassandra Lopez and Samantha Partyka made the All-America team at the 2015 NCAA Championships.
The No. 5 Red Rocks will next be in action at the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional, held the Huntsman Center at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 2. No. 8 UCLA, No. 17 Washington, No. 23 Southern Utah, Illinois and Utah State will join Utah at the Regionals. The top two finishers will advance to the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, Apr. 15-16.
