Sunia Tauteoli had some big shoes to fill, with Gionni Paul and Jared Norris’ departure from the program. He’s been doing just that, as he was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for week two of the season. Tauteoli had two interceptions on the game, both very impressive. The first turned into a pick six on the first play of the game as BYU quarterback Taysom Hill missed his target, had the ball tipped into the air, and Sunia ran under it and into the end zone to give Utah a 7-0 lead. The second came off of a Hunter Dimick hit of Hill that jarred the ball into the air that Sunia made an athletic diving catch to pickoff.
He joined Kalen Ballage of ASU, after eight (EIGHT!!!) touchdowns against Texas Tech, and Adoree Jackson, who had a punt return for a touchdown against Utah State.
One of the concerns for the defense this year were the linebackers, and both Tauteoli and Cody Barton have played the roles very well. They’ll need to continue to improve, as Utah starts Pac-12 play in 2 short weeks, against USC.
