Three Games to Watch Today

NCAA Football: UCLA at Stanford Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Utah’s win over USC yesterday was amazing, and now Utah fans will be treated to a great Saturday of college football games. There are four games today between ranked teams with No. 12 Georgia at No. 23 Ole Miss, No. 11 Wisconsin at No. 8 Michigan State, No. 19 Florida at No. 14 Tennessee (the College Gameday game), and No. 17 Arkansas at No. 10 Texas A&M. While all of these are great match ups, the games we will focus on are all about the Pac-12 South. Utah got off to a 1-0 start in Pac-12 play with the win over USC, and every other Pac-12 South team is in action today against Pac-12 North teams. Only one Pac-12 South team, Arizona State at home against Cal, is favored. The Pac-12 South got off to a crazy start with the Utah-USC game, and today will help shape the race, which will likely be as exciting as the Utah-USC game was.

Colorado at Oregon 3:30 p.m. MT Pac-12 Network

The Buffaloes have looked much improved so far this year, and they are facing an Oregon team that is coming off a heartbreaking loss at Nebraska. Colorado quarterback Sefo Liufau suffered an ankle injury in the loss to Michigan, and it remains unknown if he will play. Colorado will likely need Liufau to be healthy enough to play if they want to beat the Ducks at Autzen Stadium. Oregon has defeated two bad teams (UC Davis and Virginia), but the Oregon defense was gashed by the Nebraska offense. Additionally, Oregon suffered injuries to several key players in that game including running back Royce Freeman. This game will tell us a lot more about Colorado, and we might begin to learn if the Buffaloes are a real contender in the Pac-12 South.

Who should Utah fans root for and who will win?

Utah fans should root for the Ducks because it would put Pac-12 South rival 0-1 in Pac-12 play. I think the Ducks will win, and the margin of victory will depend on whether Liufau plays or not. If he is able to go, I could see this game closer than Oregon fans would like, but if he cannot go, I think Oregon can win big.

No. 7 Stanford at UCLA 6:00 p.m. MT ABC

This is the best Pac-12 game today. Stanford has dominated UCLA of late. UCLA has lost eight straight to the Cardinal, which is the longest losing streak for the Bruins against a team since joining the conference that is now the Pac-12 in 1928. Stanford coach David Shaw has never lost to the Bruins, and UCLA head coach Jim Mora has not defeated Stanford. Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey gashed UCLA for 243 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and he added 122 return yards and four receiving yards to top 300 all-purpose yards. Can UCLA slow down McCaffrey? That will be key in this game.

Who should Utah fans root for and who will win?

Stanford. UCLA is one of the main contenders for the Pac-12 South, and an 0-1 Pac-12 start for the Bruins will put them in a little bit of a hole, especially with Utah starting 1-0 in conference play. I am going with the Cardinal to win this game. I think it will be a close game, but I just don’t think UCLA can stop McCaffrey.

Cal at Arizona State 8:00 p.m. MT ESPN2

Do you hate defense and love offense? Do you want to watch a game where the two teams may combine for well over 1,000 yards and over 100 points? Well, then do I have the game for you, Cal at Arizona State. Both of these teams can score by the bucketload and neither can stop anyone. Arizona State and Cal are both in the top three in the Pac-12 in total offense and scoring offense, and they are 11th and 12th in the Pac-12 in total defense and scoring defense. All of this adds up to a game that will likely be an offensive explosion.

Who should Utah fans root for and who will win?

A Cal win would be helpful for Utah because it would again make a Pac-12 South contender in ASU start 0-1 in conference play. As much as I would like to see Cal win, I think Arizona State will win this one. Cal cannot stop the run, and Arizona State can run the football (they are second in the Pac-12 behind only Oregon). I think Arizona State can ride Kalen Ballage and Demario Richard and will be able to control the clock a bit better than Cal. They also have home field advantage.
