Utah Gymnastics Hosts Quad Meet Tonight

Alex Stark

The No. 5 Utah Red Rocks (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) will host a quad meet tonight at 7:00 p.m MDT at the Huntsman Center against No. 7 Denver (4-0), No. 15 Boise State (3-0) and Illinois-Chicago (0-4). This marks the second time at the Huntsman Center Utah will host a top 10 team (Utah defeated No. 7 Michigan to open the 2017 season). The Red Rocks gymnasts and coaches will be treating this meet as a practice for post season. Like post season, the meet will feature shotgun starts where the judges raise a flag for the gymnasts to start their routine as opposed to waiting for the other gymnasts to finish.

After sweeping all five events against BYU last Friday, freshman MyKayla Skinner was again named the Pac-12 Gymnast and Freshman of the Week for the second straight week. This meet will feature two of the best freshmen in the nation with Skinner, who is fourth in the nation in the all-around (39.575) and Denver’s Maddie Carr, who is tenth (39.462).

The Red Rocks stayed at No. 5 for the second week in a row after posting a season-high 196.900 at BYU. The Red Rocks rank in the top 10 in each individual event as well: No. 4 on vault (49.200 season average), No. 6 on floor (49.150) and beam (49.213), and No. 7 on bars (49.200). Utah also has multiple gymnasts ranked in individual event top 10s as well. Skinner is ranked No. 4 in the all-around (39.575), No. 3 on floor (9.925), and No. 9 on vault (9.90). Senior Baely Rowe is No. 9 on beam (9.888).

This will be the first meet of the season for Utah without sophomore all-arounder Sabrina Schwab, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear in practice earlier this week.

Denver is led by 19th year head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart. Denver is in their second season as gymnastics-only members of the Big XII. Their season-high is a 196.350.

Boise State is coached by 10th year co-head coaches Tina Bird and Neil Resnick. The Broncos have posted a season-high score of a 195.300.

26th year co-head coaches Peter Jansson and Mary Jansson lead the University of Illinois-Chicago, who is 0-4 so far this season.
