For the first time in school history, the Utah Utes will have two different finalists at the Home Depot College Football Awards, which will take place on Dec. 7 in Atlanta, Ga. Kicker Matt Gay was named a finalist for the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award, while punter Mitch Wishnowsky was named a finalist for the Ray Guy Award. Wishnowsky is the reigning Ray Guy Award winner, and Utah is seeking their fourth-straight Ray Guy Award, after Tom Hackett won the award twice followed by Wishnowsky’s win. Gay is the second Utah kicker to be named a finalist for the Lou Groza Award along with Louie Sakota, who was a finalist for both the Lou Groza and Ray Guy Awards in 2008.
The other finalists for the Lou Groza Award are Daniel Carlson (Auburn) and Dominic Eberle (Utah State). Wishnowsky is joined by fellow Ray Guy Award finalists Michael Dickson (Texas) and J.K. Scott (Alabama). Scott was previously a finalist for the Ray Guy Award in 2014 as a freshman, losing to Hackett.
