Utah now has the whole kicking collection in the trophy case, as Matt Gay was named the Lou Groza Award winner tonight at the College Football Awards tonight. Matt joins both Mitch Wishnowsky and Tom Hackett who both won the Ray Guy Award (Tom won it twice), of course, the award for the top punter.

A walk-on, Gay didn’t even attempt the first kick of the season, as Chaydon Johnson missed the first kick, and Coach Whitt gave Gay the next kick, and he went on to have an amazing season for the Utes. Matt was 27 of 31 (87%) on the season, with a long of 56, which he hit twice. His second 56 yarder could have been good from 66, it was a monster kick.
I think Louie Sakoda got screwed back in 2008, and I think Andy Phillips should have at least gotten an invite to the ceremony, so it’s nice to get this one in the trophy case.
