The Utes doomed their NCAA chances about a month ago when they went on that skid with losses to Cal, Stanford and Oregon State. The Utes will likely be in the NIT field, and considering pre-season expectations, that’s about right. The NIT is a disappointment, and something I’d expect not to see in back-to-back seasons, especially with most of the team returning next year - barring any mass exodus of players.
The goal of the NIT is to get to Madison Square Garden to win the thing, and the more games this group can play together, the better for next season. There are hopes the Utes will get a home game to open the tournament, but we’ll have to see how everything shakes out.
The last time Utah was in the NIT was a one and done appearance against Saint Mary’s on the road. Utah kind of got jobbed with the seeding in that particular NIT, but Utah bounced back the next season and was led by Delon Wright to the Sweet Sixteen.
