Utah Safety Marcus Williams Selected No. 42 by New Orleans Saints in 2017 NFL Draft

NFL: Combine Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

Safety Marcus Williams became the second former Utah football player drafted in the 2017 NFL Draft after he was selected in the second round 42nd overall by the New Orleans Saints. He joins offensive tackle Garett Bolles, who was picked No. 20 bu the Denver Broncos.. The Saints also selected a defensive back in the first round with Ohio State cornerback Marshon Lattimore.

Williams played for three seasons at Utah and declared early after his true junior season. Injuries led Williams to start as a true freshman at Utah. He struggled at times but also flashed a lot of potential. As a sophomore, Williams showed he is one of the best centerfield type safeties in the NCAA and was first-team All-Pac-12. An injury slowed Williams a bit as a junior, but he continued to prove he is a big-time playmaker. It seemed like whenever Utah meeded a big play, Williams was there to make it. That playmaking ability will help a Saints defense in desperate need of talent.
