The Utes really needed this one, after the four game losing streak, and they got it, and really played a nice 40 minutes to get it. Sure, they didn’t pull away when Washington was begging them to, but they also kept the Huskies at arms length, and really had a start to finish victory over a good Washington team.
Everything that Utah struggled with in LA they were better at tonight. They held UW to 2-of-18 from three, with one of those two coming late in the game, and out rebounded UW by 6. Utah defense was good overall, holding UW to just 38.5% shooting on the night, and played with so much more energy and urgency tonight, which they needed in the worst way.
The star for the Utes was Justin Bibbins. He was lights out from the start, scoring 20 poins on 6 of 12 shooting and 4 of 9 from deep. He had 4 of the 7 threes that Utah hit, who were just 7 of 27 on the night, and shot just 37.5% from the field themselves. It wasn’t the prettiest of basketball games, but Utah played much better. Free throws kept UW in the game at times too, when Utah couldn’t hit some easy ones throughout the game, only going 21-30 from the line. Donnie Tillman continues his comeback with a 14 point, 8 rebound game, including some timely scoring and rebounding in the waning minutes of the game. Chris Seeley also put in some really good minutes as he continues to work his way back, with 6 strong points and 5 boards. He almost made a crazy dunk on a put back, but couldn’t get it to go.
All-in-all a nice win, and something to build on as the Utes take on Washington State on Sunday at the Huntsman Center.
